No ideas, but I'm experiencing a similar problem with an 05. Staying tuned for any awnsers.
I was told to check upper radiator hose in the morning cold. If it's hard it could be head gaskets.

but what would be the best for sure way to find out if thats what it is without taking it somewhere. I was also told maybe the thermostats.

You could always remove the cap on the tank and see if it is bubbling back up inside there.

Take it to a shop or an auto zone type place and have a test done for dissolved hydrocarbons in the coolant. That will answer your question.

Head gaskets

Hi sorry to hear about the truck. My 04 LLy went at around 190000km. If your truck is blowing antifreeze out the over flow and hoses are hard it probably is the head gasket. Watch for white smoke coming out of exhaust as anti freeze drains into cylinder walls. When mine finally went I had no heat and it smoked like a bugger. The cost of repair is not cheap mine cost 6500 be sure that when they do it to upgrade head bolts. Personally I thyink a class action suit should be launched as chevy knew they were having problems with the 04 to mid 06 gaskets.

x2 and pressureize the system, pull the glow plugs, let sit over night and see what cylinders (if any) have water in them. id diagnose it fully before throwin money at it

Well let me know what I have to fix on mine. Ive almost decided its head gaskets, but i want to know for sure. Im thinking of pulling the motor and doing ehem, theres an oil leak somewhere and some new seals and gaskets are in order anyway.

the exaust gas test didnt show much. changed thermostats pressure tested it. it stayed steady around 15 to 16 for quite some time. then vaccume tested it and stayed steady around 25 for quite some time. then i drove it back home about thirty miles. got up this morning and drove it feeding cows mostly at an idle and coolant coming back out of the over flow. idk

Can I check my LBZ vin to tell if it's one with the weaker gaskets? I did read a little on this one time and couldn't finish the check of vin etc. Pisser deal out of warranty and should be stood by GM to change them. No damn diff. than injectors on LB7s guys have to eat. Looking at how much it took for GM to throw in on the LB7 issue of injectors makes for bad blood.

Interesting, I just had to fill my overflow tank last night after the Low Coolant light came on. It has been a long time since I filled it, but since I bought it, it has happened a few times. Has me a bit concerned also.

took the gaskets off and both are cracked in a couple places each. so just an ordinary gasket swap. but i do want to know how much tensile strength stock head bolts will hold.

Head gaskets?

Are you replacing the head bolts?
