I am leaving for Cancun Friday morning and would like any advice you may have. I have never been out of the country before so this is all new to me. I have my passport so I am good there. We will be going to an all inclusive resort which is new to me as well.

My main concern is getting kidnapped or killed by some burrito bum working with the drug lords or whoever keeps killing all those other burritos down there.

So what do you know??

You should be fine, Just watch were you go when leaving the resort. Try and not carry all your cash with you. If there are room safes use it, or if they have Deposit box's at the front desk use them, and keep all Valuables in it. The Drug lords are not hang'in around the Resorts drinking Frozen Drinks with Uzzi's under there arms. Or are they ??

I really wanted to go into town or wherever and check out the crap the little burritos are selling, walk around and see what shit holes people live in down there, you know...tourist things. But now I am even worried to get drunk on the resorts beach let alone at a big bar where all the young kids hang out. It is just me and my g/f going, no others.

I am also worried about getting a cab ride and not knowing where they are taking me. It would be pretty easy to say "senior frogs" and be going the opposite direction to some labor camp where my g/f will be raped and I will get my head cut off or something nuts like that. I just know with all the shit I talk on Hillary Clinton that if I get kidnapped, she isn't sending anyone to get me.

Dont drink the water. And definately use the room safes. My wife and I stayed in the myan riviera and I forgot 40.00 in my shorts in the room and went to the beach for the morning. By the time I got back the cleaning ladies had emptied my pockets.

Also take about 100.00 bucks in 1.00 bills for tipping. I didnt leave the resort for the same worries you posted. Also take a zanex before you get into the mexican cabs. They dont have any driving laws apparently and I felt like I was in the fast and furious on the way to the hotel.

My g/f(who is going with me, this is her idea) her parents go to that mya riveria however I didn't want to go there because it was pitched to me by the travel agent as a more exclusive romantic type place and well, I didn't want to go to mexico without seeing as many drunk sluts on the beach as possible. So we choose Cancun :thumb:

If you go to town, take just enough small bills ( in different pockets or locations :D ) for bribe money and payoff money. Never know, you may find a broke cop trying to pay the bills.

Do you read the news at all? Mexico is the last place in the world I would travel right now. A family friend who is a union pipe fitter use to travel back every year to see his family and bring all the kids toys. He wont even go anymore.

Guess I'm glad I don't watch the news. I have been to several parts of Mexico and have never have had a problem.

We stopped in Cozumel and Costa Maya in August on a cruise. Two years ago we went to Cabo, Mazatlan, Puerta Vallarta. It has been probably 20 years since I have been to Cancun though. Had a blast :coolspot: I guess it didn't hurt that I was with someone that spoke fluent Spanish:D

I will agree cab drivers are nuts though

Mexico has been beat to death by the media. I live fairly close to the border and go to lake Amistad regularly ( border lake between Texas and Mexico). People are being shot and boats taken, cars stolen or just robbed of belongings. That's a fact, but few and far between. We've never had a problem but we pack and stay aware and plan our trips. Border towns seem to be the worst for disputes, suprises and rivalry

Ranchers near the border have learned if they leave their houses unlocked and food on the table, most border crossers eat and go on about their way leaving everything else behind.

It's really no worse than any place in the U.S. I fear to visit.

Mexicans are great people and Mexico is a great place to visit, so long as you plan.

We went in July..Had no problems except for a few guys asking if you want to buy drugs while we were on 5th street in Playa del Carmen...But that being said you need to ask your travel guy when you get about the pirate ship party and definetly go to 5th street in Playa del Carmen..The pirate ship was the most fun thing we did besides snorkeling..

Just be careful and everything will be fine. We just got back from Cancun a few weeks ago, I got my phone service swapped to a mexico plan just for that trip. If you use verizon they have a us and mexico plan. You have to dial 011 then the number to call back to the states. Our resort was in Tulum which was 1hr 45min from the airport and it was dark the whole way, and I didn't feel threatened at all. Even stopped at a pemex on the way there for some cervesas. Have fun.

I'm not talking about the news myself, just talking on what our friend said. He did also say if he had to go he'd fly as he normally drives and having any sort of decent car is asking.for it.
