A guy I work with has an 02 LB7 thats 6 months out of warranty, the injectors just went. Was wondering if anyone has one out there that I can rent or somthing, would rather not pay $100 for a new one, since I dont own an lb7 and am jsut helping him out for free should he decide to tackle this himself.

Also does anyone have any good resources or write-ups for this that are not from DP since I cant get on there.

Where the best place to buy injectors? And is it fine to replace just the bad ones if the others are in spec? I know it'd be nice to do them all at once but, thats a big chunk of change, and you dont get any gauranty that they'll last as long as the stock ones already have.

it can be done without the tool. I got mine from the dealer and replaced all 8

Pensacola Diesel is cheap but there have been some that were bad as soon as they were installed.

Dont go with pensacola, i went though 3 sets of thier injectors they dont last at all. one set fillet my crank with too much fuel and the other two returned too much fuel and the balance rates were way out of spec. I returned them after the 3rd time replacing them and bought ones from the dealer instead. pensacola gave me a 90% refund plus cores back, but i had to call them and remind them to send cores back to me.

to get the injectors out i used a pry bar on the headstud prying on the ear of the injector

chris mytymouse took some pics and did a breif write up on tips and hints on doing an injector swap.

http://www.duramaxdiesels.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4824

I put some pics together and did a small write up also. if you dont pull a cup out the swap will go well.

I've done two sets now. On one engine they pulled out by hand, I about shit! just wiggled them a little and tugged them out. On the other one they came out with light prying except two that pulled sleeves. I drain as much coolant out as I can to help avoid filling a cylinder. I used a flexie straw and my shop vac to pull out the little that went in. I just held the straw like a smoke on the shop vac.

DIY injector re-build.

So, it seems like getting it all apart and back together again is enough work that doing these one by one ain't the way to go. So, all 8 or at least all 4 on one side ?

Looking at parts costs; over $2,000 for reman replacements, or a little under $500 for a "full rebuild kit" of nozzles O rings, copper washers, etc.
Is this the reman process, i.e. put in a kit of nozzles plus some skilled labor ?

I am NOT a trained diesel tech, or any kind of auto tech for that matter - just a shade tree amateur.
A couple of videos suggest ~15 minutes per injector - if nothing goes wrong.
If I do this it will be 4 at a time, so allowing for AMATEUR status, say 2 extra hours per side for the rebuilds.

If any of you did this please comment, warn me off if necessary.

Who sells the best kit for this ?
Who should I avoid ?
etc.

Well, this is a very old thread, but I have done mine.

I did a write up on it here;

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/71...ews/279436-lb7-injector-replacement-pics.html

The OP did not want to go to DP, but you are not him, so I'll throw it in here.

I would not use a "rebuild" kit. I would get a full set from LDS, and do them all at once.

Lots of stories about guys using the nozzle replacements and still having problems.

Just my $.02

I would get a full set from Lincoln diesel specialties with install kit and do it once. If ANY cups are suspect you should reseal. I personally reseal them, immediately clamp the injector down and put it all together, but will not start the truck until next day. I've had a leaking cup and it n is no fun to tear apart again. You will also need away to clean out your high pressure lines or buy some.

Thanks guys.

That is some write up and picture story, thanks for "publishing" to the rest of us.

Something that threw this noob was around item 10

"10. Remove those 8mm screws, then remove the 19mm fittings that hold the high pressure lines to the common rail, and the injectors themselves;
once agian, I missed getting a good pic of this step, but here one from the drivers side;"
Right after that you show the injectors OUT - - but you haven't even taken the upper valve cover off by that point.
On second/third reading it becomes clear (clearer).
Not to pick for the sake of it, but it probably throws other noobs too <grin>

Still a GREAT write up, IMO it qualifies as a "How to"

I only have about 180K miles on my '03 but it has been mostly towing now it has lost a bit of power and started to "make oil".
So I think it is time.

Buy your injectors from Lincoln diesel. When you do you will receive instructions and a tech number to call (even on the weekends) if you need assistance. Best advice I ever got was to buy from them. It's time consuming but not difficult.
