My converter and lockup box band aid days might be over. After 4 yrs, my tightened up Precision ML is worse than ever at coupling. Even in my lower tunes, I can set the throttle at like 75 or 80mm3 load, hold it there on an on-ramp, and watch the converter slip so badly that I can’t get down to 600rpm slip and get lockup until 6th gear at 85mph. I have a video - it’s painful to watch lol.

I’ve driven some other converters and gotten many helpful opinions. I’m in hell at work until after April, so I’m taking time to decide my move, as I don’t have time to do anything on the truck until then. I was thinking Goerend R, but my truck is 8,000lbs with the bumpers and winch and sound deadening... so I’m thinking Goerend K. I liked the Precision’s around town manners in letting the Turbo spool up super fast, and I’m thinking the R might be too tight for my truck. Mark drove my truck and remarked that the higher stall helped it to feel lighter around town - before he laughed and said it was a heavy pig as he tried to get it stopped LMAO.

Does this sound reasonable? Of course I want my truck to still happily DD,tow, and do everything it did stock... so I don’t want to make a one-sided choice. This kind of shit is so subjective and there’s no “best”, but I’d like to hear what you guys think, please.

you wont like the K. The R is real damn close to what you have now but way better coupling. K is going to feel real loose in there and wont be fun to tow with at all till lock up.

Ahh ok. It's so hard reading about these online. I know converters and I know what I want, but all you get is stall info based on (I assume) stock power levels. No idea on acceleration or coupling characteristics. Thanks guys :hug::thumb:

oh - one more. Maybe I need to ask Dave directly... can/should I have him increase the stall slightly on the R for getting my heavy ass out of the hole?

Wouldn’t you want a lower stall when you weigh more? Your truck is heavier so it’ll work the converter more resulting in higher rpm while coupling. Just because your truck is heavier doesn’t mean the turbo will need more rpm to build boost either

Tough to say. I had a crazy tight low stall converter and hated it. My truck would was so slow out of the hole that I shit myself leaving a stop sign to jump into traffic. That was the Suncoast 777. Once I made it out a few feet it blew the tires off with coupling, but it was dead leaving the hole.

You sure you don’t have an issue with the truck? I have a goerend really ****ing tight converter in a lmm 30% tips with a stage 2 3794 65mm. It could actually use a lower stall. I believe it’s an 1800 stall I forgot what mike put in, he said it would push through the brakes at idle and it does. I can make 20psi at 1400rpm brake boosting really easy.

My truck is 7950 on the scales and the R works really well. I was also concerned about the additional weight compared to my LB7 with the same converter, but it works really well.

Nah was just that 777 that I didn’t like. It acted like that on the stock turbo and on the stg2r and tips. With the tightened up ML it was great except for the blow through after it was already moving.

I've spent a fair amount of time the past few months behind that converter on an LMM, and there's a lot that I like about it and I've truly considered it, but it's not for me - thanks for suggesting though.

Tuning is Mark's in-person... with the old converter in better shape than now, LOL.

In other news - I know a guy a couple hours away that has a Goerend R on his LBZ and said I can take it for a spin. Once 4/15 is in the books, I plan to take him up on that offer!

keep in mind the R was specifically designed for the lml which until the l5p was the heaviest truck to date.

as someone who has daily driven and raced the R alot, i can say its a fantastic converter and had great coupling

Should I expect that Precision will refresh this converter under warranty? I'm in year 4 of the 5yr warranty, but the language is vague as to whether this would be considered for warr coverage? Any experience here with their policy? I'm wondering if I have a core toward its replacement with an R, or if I stand a chance to get it repaired and sell it?

just realized that Dave provides the K-factor. OK, so based on the math his 2000-2200rpm stall on the R, he's using rear wheel torque of 500 or thereabouts. So if I figure my truck at 1100ftlbs, I should see stall of approx 101*(sq root of 1100)= 3350'ish. Now I can really see why you guys were telling me that there's plenty of stall with the "R". Thank you!
