I am redoing my engine and was wanting to get my cam and crank keyed, but I can't find anyone around Des Moines, Iowa who can do it for me. Is there anyone close by here or around that can do it?

It's really not that hard. Any machine shop is more then capable. They're just elongating an existing hole, no timing to figure out. Have you brought them a cam to show what you want? My machine guy had no issue doing cam, did take some time to set up some blocks for the crank. Hardest part was getting the gear off the snout lol

if a machine shop tells you they can't key a camshaft, run away! Keyways are nothing new

If you guys were near me I could do them for cheap like. $150 seems like a lot for 30 mins of work hell if I knew I was going to do a bunch I could get them done faster.

In a stock crank there is basiclly 5mm pins holding the gears on... a 5mm key way is added but it gets tricky because the crank snout is 2 different diameters the keyway must be stepped so to speak...heres a pic

I see what you mean but sill cant see it for $150.00 Most Machine Shops (Not just Auto one) around here charge $80/h. V-Blocks +shims, Dial the part in, cut key, check size, finish pass on cut and de-burr. I a good shop could do that in 15-20mins now do it twice as you want the Cam and Crank. I cant see more than 1 hour work.

Now that I think about it Do you have to Key(broach) the parts the mating part?
If so then $150 is not as bad.

I don't know I may have it all wrong. I am just a Machinist that has been in the trade 12 years.

Yes your right it can be done in about 1 hour ...and the gears and balancer are already keyed to accept the pins that's factory installed in the crank...

What do you mean by stepped? Is it becasue the key goes into the face of the second surface?
