Keyed crank question

After receiving my assembled shortblock I noticed that it looks like the machine shop only put a Keyway for the balancer and not the crank gear. It looks like the empire kit that can be done in the truck only does the balancer as well? Should I pull the crank and have them do the crank gear as well?

Never going to get it off without damaging the gear and or the crank. crank gear will never move, only reluctor wheel hub and balancer should be keyed on a stock crank.

I just wanted to make sure so I don't have to do it twice, we key the camshaft which meshes with the crank gear so I said to myself why is the crankshaft gear also not done

Fwiw I've always keyed the crank gear. Hydro puller will pull the gear off. Heat the gear up and it slips back on. No pro but has worked for me

EDIT: but I wouldn't pull the bottom end apart again to do it.

Just heard back from the machine shop and he said that there is a separate Keyway under the gear, it just doesn't run the full length it has two separate keys one for the gear one for the balancer. My mind is at ease!

When they key the crank or cam dose it matter what position they key it? And what size keys are they using?

Iirc the keys should be 5mm, and in order to use the alignment dots from the crank gear to the cam gear it should be done in the same place as the existing dowel pins.
