Well after all the hurdles lately the new motor finally fired-up this afternoon. It wasn't without a few "Maalox Moments" but the major teething problems have been cleared (I hope).

Need some tuning advice. Mahle 15:1 pistons + GM decked/overbore head gasket + TTS Extreme cam with a significant amount of duration + 60% over nozzles = healthy amount of white smoke at idle.

What would be the next step in tuning through this - more timing at idle & down low?

On a side note - this motor wraps up tight! Crazy throttle response once you are above 1000rpm.

Congrats. I'm hoping to have mine back together in a couple of weeks too. You might try using the DVT to play with fuel pressure and idle speed. Unfortunately timing can't be controlled with DVT, but you can play with the other two to see what helps and then play with the timing in the tune to fine tune it. Using the DVT to play with fuel pressure helped me before when I rebuilt my motor the first time.

Does still smoke once it is up to temp? It is most likely smoking because the rings are not seated yet. Get out and put a load on it. Pulling a trailer works great.

What would be the next step in tuning through this - more timing at idle & down low? Start with less timing. I mean a good 5 to 10* less from 2000rpm on up. You might need to pull your pilot injection timing im closer to. I doubt you will have to on second thought. 60% overs are not that big. But you might. Basicly it takes time to work it all out.

Good deal!:)

I hope to have it on a dyno tomorrow to run it under load to help get the rings seated (It has only ran for about 15 minutes total and it didn't get above 210 degrees so the rings do need more time/heat in them)

Rings are seating and the white smoke is gone at idle thanks to Nick's tweaking.

I think my coolant leak came from the rear plate block off. When I had her loaded hard on a dyno run up water was coming from the passenger's side rear of the block. It does not leak at idle or after hard street driving. The rear plate o-rings were in real good shape so I am thinking/hoping that is the cause and not a cracked plate.

Once the leak is gone for good time to mash the skinny pedal and make some new hp numbers. My stock longblock topped out at 741hp. I am going to love beating on this new motor with some real fuel & timing in the tunes now.
