Looking to switch to WOW for internet and cable tv and I think they are cable internet. Either way it pisses me off that they "rent" you a damn modem so you end up paying a shitload for the damn thing after a few years. I would just as soon buy my own damn modem but didnt know if there were "god" ones and "bad" ones. Just need a basic one. I dont game or nothing. So whats the dealio?

That's a good question. Legally in most (all?) states, you can buy your own "customer side" equipment. And they do sell cable modems.

There is a newer spec out there, DOCSIS 3, and it's compatible with 2 and 1. I would get that to "future proof" things.

You should call your cable provider and tell them you want to supply the modem. Often the one they provide is old stuff, and sometimes used.

That being said, I just use the cable company unit. That way if there is a problem, it ALWAYS their fault. If you have your own equipment and something gets messed up, you might be on your own.

PS - Cable internet rips. Nuff said.

Hopefully I will get an Paul here in the states and not Patel over in India who knows everything and asks me if I want a slushy.

I told Comcast to keep their crap and I bought my own. I have a Motorola SurfBoard and it works great!

x2. I've got a motorola sb5120 that's been running constantly for about 9 years now... Will replace it with another (newer) motorola when it dies!!!

I would just ask if you can use your own cable modem. Motorola Surfboards work on everything AFAIK. The guy who comes to your house to set you up will do the settings in the cable modem. Just have a location picked out, and a computer ready to go in that location.
