I need to replace the internal mode switch on my 2009 allison1000. Does the valve body have to come off first? I have rebuilt engines but never really worked on a tranny; is this a doable job? Special tools, little parts that go flying? Any insight is appreciated.

You need to drop the valve body to get the shift shaft locator pin out, then you can slide the shift shaft out, and replace the ims.
