Going to get a new intercooler, trying to decide actually been thinking about a Banks?! I know that spearco's have been the gold standard, but after review of BD's I think theirs is better, but it is very similar to a Banks for 3-$400 more, maybe been reading to many Banks adds.

I love my Spearco. It's held up great for almost 50k miles and I documented actual gains in manifold boost pressure and EGT reduction vs. the stock piece.

Travis you ever look at any industrial intercoolers?

Last time I was there they had some custom ones to choose from that where = in value
I can't remember the name but it was a nice desighn
you could also choose inlet size

On ALL of the air to air intercoolers available-custom industrial ones aside-has anyone done any real world testing to see if there were any gains to be had? I remember reading on several different occasions that the stocker is actually quite good in the GM's and didn't really need replacing.

If it were me looking to do a CAC swap however, I think I would go water to air.

I still havent put my Banks one on. There was some talk when we did the before and after dyno runs with the downpipe of going back later to do the same with the intercooler.

for me, i dont know if it is so much the added power or egts reduction, but they say the stock ones crack running 60+ lbs boost. im at 80lbs, so i know my time is gonna be short. the reason both me and travis said we would get the bd is because they test theirs to 100+ lbs. boost

I like the looks of the BD also

the spearco's have issues with high boost and cracking

That's pretty speculative. Mine has been fine, as have ALL, but a very few early production units. Spearco's cores, tanks and welding have been the gold-standard in motorsports long before hotrod diesels came along. Besides fancy marketing, NONE of the other products on the market can hold a candle to Spearco's quality and performance, in my experience.

Its not speculative, its not very few. Lots of them were cracking, do a search. Cracking problems was the main reason i went with my bd, i really wanted a spearco, but couldnt see the justice of sending it off every year to get repaired. Just cause a product has been around the longest doesnt mean its the best, in my experience. Im sure yours had been fine, how much boost do you make with that 4088?, i made around 40 when i had mine and twin cp3s, the stock intercooler will hold that just fine.

They claim to have redesigned the tanks so they dont crack, but only time will tell.

I am running the BD , i wont speculate on the argument of the best ,but i can say the BD is the biggest in surface area and the thickness of the core , and in Air to air Intercoolers the surface area directly relates to how much heat can be srcubbed . Also the BD uses a different core desing that flows better then the bar anf fin design every one else is using , plus Like josh said , its tested to 100 PSI , they are all good products IMOP , the BD just has the edge from the research i have done .

They might have been the gold standard in motorsports until the boost levels went through the roof. Yours might be doing great at 40 psi towing a trailer but double or triple your boost #'s ad see how the spearco holds up.

The original poster is running a gt4202 and 2xcp3. Thats setup is good for 60+ psi and with numbers like that I would recommend a BD unit. BD is a diesel company that designed their coolers around the big power and big boost #'s a diesel can put out.

It was my understanding that only the first production run of Spearcos were the ones that had issues with cracked welds and it's since been cured. I know there are folks that run WAAAY more boost than I do, but for my money, I'll stick with the company I've used for years, is local to me.

Regardless of my personal opinions, it's been a long time since I bought my IC and I know a lot has changed. It's good to see what else is out there now.

I'm putting a Banks in mine. I am only changing it because I didn't/don't trust the plastic end tank and goofy spring clip connection and plastic elbow on the stock LBZ CAC.
