last week(6/4) truck through a P0752 code... shift solenoid valve stuck on. and i lost 2nd gear. truck would wind 1st out to 3200-3500rpm then shift to 3rd and lockup. TCC is tuned to come on by 30mph in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.. manual 2nd gear was barely there. down shit out of 3rd it went straight to 1st..
replaced both solenoids and a VB from a working 4l85 problem still existed..
so i pulled the tranny.
found the stock 16 element sprag rotated freely in both directions. found both forward clutch, direct clutch and drum manual 2nd gear band, forward clutch hub, severely discolored. there are bushing on both sides of the forward clutch hub, both where gone when i pulled it a part.

i curently have 195k on the chassis and 110k of that is between 14-26,000lb at an estimated 300fwhp

i replaced FC, DC, DC drum, intermediate sprag with a 34 element, FC and DC pistons, 2nd man band with a 1.255" wide band(stock is 1") forward clutch hub with a fordge unit, seals and bearing thorough out the tranny. also replaced the roller clutch for the over drive unit due to me breaking it after i inspected the clutcehs and steels.. both 4th gear clutches are brown with no burn marks and the steels are shinny with no hot spots.
aamco gave me B&W kevalat clutched with kelone steels with slots in them...
so pictures
the hacked harness from the PO when i swaped both solenoids

I thought you had a 4l80 and the 85 was the spare?

i have a 01 4L85 out of a RV (slatted for my 75 chevy) and the truck came with an 85.
the RV doesnt have a parking brake paw and the output shaft is ~1" shorter.. i wasnt sure if i cause enough damage to ruin the case or not.. worse case i was going to swap cases.

You said your clutches looked good Adam. They don't look good to me.

your right those 2 dont, the other 3 clutch packs did..

the TCC broke monday... going from a ~1500 stall(stock) to a ~2000 stall TC.... big difference... before TCC lockup with stock part throttle shifts where 1800-2200 with an empty trailer (14,000lb gross)... now the part throttle shifts are ~300rpm higher... 2200-2500rpm.. i'll have a load tomorrw... ~11,000lb. see how it does with it... expecting higher unlocked rpm shift points at same throttle %... stocker when the TCC locked in 2nd at 30mph (about 2500rpm) there was a 100-200rpm drop.....

most likely why the allison trucks feel "sluggish" and "unresponsive" to me when i drive them since now my truck has the same feeling

An Allison with a 1054 feels a lot better to me. It has way more coupling down low

according to suncoast the 1054 is looser then what i just put in.. and looser than the 56

i had the stock 6.5 TC when i put the LBZ in the truck last year.... its tighter then the 1056 i ran in my 02, its also tighter then stock TC that came in that truck.. i was able to chirp the tires (265s) with a stock TC and a tow tune on a 1-2 shift at part throttle in non lock up..... as soon as i got the truck back form mike l with a 56 i couldn't do it even with a 500hp tune.. i have a log of that TC sitting at 3000rpm with a 1mph (1st gear sledpull 2wd)wheel speed right before my tailshaft yoke broke...
on drag racing i'd see maybe a 100-200rpm drop between the shifts before the TCC would lock up..

the reason why i believe i can compare them (4l85 to ally) is the start ratios are almost identical 1st * rear dif... off the line is really the only place that these are even close together..

2.48*4.63=11.48
3.10*3.73=11.55

Sounds like you need a converter like the one I have in the van. I bet it's every bit as tight as the one you originally had in it if not tighter.

not really a better place to haul something to so it can be fixed!
