LB7: Injector Concerns

I recently returned to Texas from a trip out to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for some training. While on my return trip and about 700 miles from home, I noticed a fairly loud clatter while cruising at 65 mph down the highway. I immediately pulled over to see what was going on and noticed the truck was running very rough and sounded like all the rockers had loosened up. I turned the truck off and checked everything out, all fluids were where they needed to be and everything appeared as it should. I had only used 1 dose at my last fill up of a 100 gallon Diesle Kleen bottle, I run the recommended dose every fill up, so I figured worse case I had a hung injector or two. Started the truck and the clatter was still there, so I dumped the rest of the bottle in the tank, there was probably just north of 3/4's a tank a fuel in there. I limped it down the highway maybe another 20 or so miles to a Love's truck stop to assess the situation further, the clatter never quit and still was running fairly rough. I didn't have my head together so I didn't get a screen shot of my injector rates, but they were all over the place -7's and +5's, and you could feel the out of balance while limping along. At loves I went ahead and changed all my fuel filters as I had new ones with me and topped off with more fuel (pump said up to B20). Fired her back up and let her run for just over an hour and the rates came back down and she started running better. Went ahead and topped off with fuel again and hit the highway, and she's back to normalish! It's not making any oil and appears to be running fine, but I'm noticing an ever so slight fog out of the exhaust at idle (barely noticible in daylight) and a noticeable diesel smell from the exhaust. Prior to this the return rates were all within spec my highest was number 8 at -3.0 warm in drive.

Would it be a problem to change just 1 or 2 injectors or are they required to be done as a matched set? My worst 1 in drive is number 8 at -7.0 while up to temperature and at -6.0 in park, but the number 1 is not far behind at 4.0 in drive. Last set of injectors were done only 35k ago by GM to the tune of $2,876.16, I just don't want to replace them all if the others are fine.

gm specs are in park its +/- 4 and in drive its +/- 6 only check them at normal operating temperature. with LB7 injectors id highly advise against just changing one injectors because their flow matched when buy set of 8. So older worn ones will flow bit different than new ones. weird how it was running so rough then got better. might of just been some bad diesel. ive heard B20 can cause some weird problems because it can gum up fuel system. so if it was me id just drive it for awhile and keep eye on rates. then if seems to get worse and run poorly id change all 8.

I wasn't sure if I had got some bad diesel that caused the hang up, but the fuel I normally run is up to B15. A truck driver there recommended changing the filters and trying the truck stops B20 to free up the sticky injector. It did the trick but I'm thinking the damage may already be done.

Try flushing the injectors. GM sells an upper fuel system cleaner. There are a few threads out there about how to do it, it's simple. Give the injectors a good cleaning, you may be suprised :woott:

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the earlier Dmax couldn't run bio. Would clog the fuel system. At least that's what I was told.

Around here pretty much all the diesel pumps are a mixture of anywhere from B5 minimum to B20 maximum. I haven't ran any pure bio, but from what I've seen filter maintenance is a bit more regimented. I think I have plenty of filtration, I'm running an ADII and along with a Nicktane CAT filter adapter on the stock filter head.

Yeah we have a few like that here too but I try to stay away from those. You definitely have a lot of filtration. Ever cut any of your filters open to see what crap the filter caught?

I noticed you were using a level 3 tune. Do the rates change when running your stock(ish) tune? Yes on 8 and 1.

I haven't cut any of them open to see what they look like, but I'll probably cut these open later just to see.

3 is a 90 horse tune that I use for daily driving, but no I haven't switched them and checked the rates. I'll do that today though.
