Incident at a Target store in Mishawaka, Indiana
This Saturday evening October 25, 2008 at 7:20, I was leaving the apparel side doors of the Mishawaka SuperTarget. I had my purse over my shoulder and my eyes up and looking around. Before I reached the handicapped parking spaces, a car came around to the right of me from behind and a man leaned out the driver's side window. He yanked my purse off of my shoulder while continuing to drive and quickly sped away toward the Pier One exit and was gone in less than 10 seconds.
There were customers EVERYWHERE and I was less than 20 steps from the doors of Target.
PLEASE tell EVERY WOMAN you care about, to keep your cell phone and your car/house keys IN YOUR HAND OR IN YOUR COAT POCKET- NOT YOUR PURSE!!!
Because my cell phone was in my hand, I could call the police, call home and call my bank IMMEDIATELY.
Because my house and car keys were in my pocket, I had much less (although I was rattled enough, believe me) to worry about, changing the front door lock, being Locked out of my car in the parking lot, etc.
The Mishawaka police officer was there very quickly and other than a sore shoulder, I am just fine. He said they are anticipating a very bad holiday season for this sort of thing at ALL the shopping areas, including the grocery stores.
Heads up - KEYS AND PHONE IN YOUR POCKET/HANDS!!!
The Target manager was of very little help and there was no security person anywhere inside or outside during the entire time I was being; interviewed by the police. The security camera image was too blurry to get a license plate number.
I made it 47 years without this sort of thing happening, if it can happen to me - it can happen to anyone.
Be safe---
