The strap that grounds my hood broke and I was just wondering its purpose and if I should bother to replace it?

The light for sure but of course that got dropped. I'm thinking maybe for static charge build up to prevent a spark from a crash or something.

Totally useless. Have no idea why gm puts one on.

I've been running without one for 2+ years.

Your hood is still grounded thru the hinges since it's all metal on metal contact

The truck I did have with an under hood light didn't even have a ground strap.

I know mine never came with a hood strap and I have (had) an underhood light. But think the wiring for light had a ground in it.

Its not for the hood light...because obviously 03+ trucks dont have an underhood light (so why would GM keep the ground strap there?). And second of all, on the 02 and older trucks that did have a hood light, the ground was separate (the lights had two wires going to them, power and ground). So the ground strap for the hood was/is for something else.

The only thing I can think of is maybe in case lightning hits the truck, or for some sort of other electromagnetic shielding? FM radio interference perhaps? Who knows. But its not for the underhood light.

Off it stays then, i'll report back if I notice anything different with radio reception etc. I already get very clear radio and I don't even run the antenna...

One reason is so your truck acts as one piece .. have you ever seen a electrical weld its what you get with a loose connection it starts arking and heats up and melts the metal together , so with out it if you're truck ever got hit with lightning or got energized some how your hood hinges would act as the connection then they because they move and not being a tight connection would weld together in whatever possession they where in

I think its there for stray electromagnetic signals that could influence electronic throttle control and other things.

I've been snooping around the net and that's what the consensus seems to be. I even came across some stories of cars that would die when crossing under big power lines. Repeatable. And fixing the hood strap fixed the issue.

The things you learn... :D
