Just wondering how many of you have an air powered impact wrench that is over 1,000 lb. ft. of torque? If so, have you used it to break loose the flexplate bolts on the dmax motor? I have an IR Thunder Gun (625 lb. ft.) and the flexplate bolts just laugh at it, was thinking about stepping up to the bigger guns that are 1k or higher.....

I used a 1" harborfreigth gun but you need a1/2" hose to power it . I also used a 1/2" braker bar with a 4' cheater

its not the torque converter bolts hes talking about, its the flexplate bolts on the back of the block. i know a titanium ingersoll rand wouldnt touch them on my motor. x2 on what ben said.

darn. I used a 1/2" breaker bar and a 3' cheater and gave it most of what I had, wouldn't budget. Btw, I'm about 6'2" / 335lbs. The breaker bar just started bending, so after a few good pulls I decided to wait and look for a better solution. I think I might try to pick up a 3/4" breaker and a longer cheater pipe. That, and I still want one of the bigger impacts :)

which model titanium did you use?

I've done them with 1/2 bar and pipe and with a 3/4 drive IR gun (not sure on the model) Breaker bar worked but was tough to keep the whole engine from wanting to move, the gun was nice but like mentioned it needs 1/2 hose to run it.

If you set the motor on the ground and block it up under the motor mount on the left (driver's) side, you should be able to break them loose. I used a 1/2" breaker bar and the top half of a floor jack handle. I've done it that way twice, and it worked both times.

i used a 3/4 gun and it worked fairly easily if they are a pain then give them a couple hits clockwise then try to loosen them up the shock should break them loose :)

they are definitely tight, I had a 5 foot cheater pipe on a breaker bar and I was standing on the bar bouncing it (im 6' 2" 200lbs) and I could just barely get them loose...

tried that on two of the four motors I have in my garage right now, and they wouldn't budge. Tomorrow I'm going to pick up a 40" 3/4" breaker and reducer, along with a 5' cheater pipe and will give that a shot. If no-go, then it's on to the 3/4" impacts.

Either way, I'll pick up a few more tools I can put to good use :)

I thought they would come out easy with the IR 3/4 but nope, I had to get big moe out. It's a 1 inch gun that came from the old ARO plant that my grandpa retired from. ARO was bought out by IR and I'm not sure who owns them now.

I think the 3/4 inch impact would have done it, if it would have been hooked to bigger hose and the little compressor my friend had at his house only pumps 135psi. (He has the lift.) It was on a friends truck. BTW

Just buy the socket in the size you need. With a 40" breaker bar, and 5' of cheater, you're just gonna break the reducer.

I haven't found a 17mm allen-head socket so far in 3/4". Find them all day in 1/2" locally, including the impact version I have.

I bought the big 40" breaker today at Northern, but once I got back to my office I found that they had it online for $10 cheaper with free shipping to the store; plus, I found a lesser-name brand that has almost the same max. torque rating for half the cost. Should be fun either way.
