I'm new to this forum thing so Im sorry if im doing something wrong. I am hoping to run a 71mm cheetah turbo from fleece. I have a lly that needs to have the head gaskets replaced so i figured while the truck is apart id like to do some performance upgrades. i plan on doing head studs a water pump and thermostats im just wondering what else would make sense to do or would need to be done to run that turbo also any other suggestions anyone would have for the best options for head gaskets and what not.. i appreciate your time

thank u

How much power are you thinking of running?

I learned a long time ago nothing is cheap with these trucks. Seems like u have a solid plan just remember there's no gurentees at that power you won't shorten a rod or something. And if u haven't already gotten rid of egr and re-routed PCV now is a good time.

EGR delete (I do a full delete and a 3" y-bridge) truck seemed a lot happier with that and my 68mm Cheetah.
PCV reroute
You're going to need to do you trans or have a light foot

The biggest thing with cheetahs is the right tuning to keep drive pressure in check. I wanted a cheetah because I have the turbo brake feature built into my tunes and tow with my truck.

You could do a different turbo for cheaper though. Just a thought.

I don't see a built trans in your sig. If it is stock you are putting the cart way before the horse.

Although I said i didn't wanna spend crazy money i definitely understand theres not going to be a way around that... i plan on doing a transmission within a year aswell but id like to get the motor done first.. does anyone have any suggestions on what i should put my money towards as far as getting the motor to be sound with the trans on the backburner?? Also i plan on tossing the edge and going with EFI live

That is ass-backwards. A built trans should be first. Your truck is capable of making 500-530 rwhp and running in the 12s with the stock turbo/motor.

I completely agree that im doing it backwards the thing is that a bad head gasket is kinda forcing me into it i would rather only take the motor apart once if i can help it is all i plan on doing a trans almost immediately just wonder what my options are for the motor end of things

My humble opinion would be to get a fresh gasket in there with some good head studs (ARPs or A1s) and instead of spending the money on a turbo get your trans built. Then you have a solid foundation to start adding power.

A built trans and good EFI tune will blow you away if your running around stock with an Edge.

Your options? Either you want to spend 10-15k for a built motor or you dont. :D There really is no in-between.

Just replace the gaskets and build the trans. You'll be more than happy and you'll have around 5k in the whole process if you do the gaskets yourself.

Cmon guys...that's not what he wanted to hear!

I still want to make 800rhwp on a stock motor, trans, and fuel system. Your crushing dreams here:rofl:

well i appericate what ur saying i wish i never never said i wanted to go cheap thats really not what i meant i was just wondering if there was anything i could do say that cost an extra 5k that would make a big diffence while i have the thing apart but i guess when u add up all the costs u hit that 10-15 mark pretty quick. thanks for your input though

While your in the motor do a egr delete full, pcv reroute, 3" y bridge, ppe race valve, lift pump, and studs save the money for the turbo use towards transmission. You don't have to take turbo off to do the head gaskets. If you want to plan ahead send your injectors to get honed 45% or 60% over so when you do have a upgraded turbo and trans your tuning can be safer. Also for turbos i would do some more research look into Danville performance or a s366 kit. But like stated above the stock lly turbo will do 530 wrhp but the if you do a upgraded turbo your just going to have more lag and a slipping trans.:thumb:

Don't forget everyone you add apart tuning needs to be tweaked. That will add up. I would do the trans first for sure though.

Your current setup probably makes around 400hp with the edge. Instead of doing a turbo, build your transmission, buy a lift pump, and get a good EFI live tune on the truck. Do uppipes(or an lb7 up pipe) and an actual egr delete while you do studs but wait on the turbo. You'll pick up about 100hp just with EFI live

I would do trans and tuning along with your headgaskets and studs. If you are without a doubt planning on doing a different turbo. I would do valve springs at the same time.
