Hi guys I know this is a diesel forum, but have a question about my gas puller.I have an 84 big block 4x4 street mod puller.Broke my steering box today and with winter approaching figure its a good time to upgrade to hydraulic steering.Looking for complete kit including orbital valve and steer cylinder.Do you guys have a particular set up you recommend and where to get it from. Thanks in advance....

PSC makes some nice stuff. A friend of my dad's bought a bunch of stuff for his monster Hearse to put hydraulic assist and full hydraulic rear steering from them. He was extremely happy with what he got.

Thanks bubba,is there a specific size tractor or combine unit to look for.I hang around 1000 pounds of weight plus the motor weight.I think thats what is contributing to breaking the boxes

I agree with bubba, try to find a tractor salvage yard or the like, nyssa tractor supply is where we get alot of stuff for our farm equipment. Most likely any size tractor would do, but i would stay away from articulated units sometimes their valving is different using a feedback ram, which you wouldnt need.

Yup, won't really matter what size tractor or combine. The size of the cylinder will dictate how strong the steering is and the size of the pump will dictate how fast it is. You probably want to go with about a 2.5" cylinder to make sure the steering does not jerk around too bad. Good luck!!

Thanks bubba, thats what I was fighting this year with the setup the truck came with.It was using the stock box with an electric pump in the box of truck.Dont think pressures were right due to the fact of chasing the steering all the way down track.Would the electric pump be compatible with hyraulic steering or should I look for pump too? Thanks again for the info

You want the electric pump but you will need to know what the flow and pressure rating the pump has to see if it will keep up with the hydraulic cylinder. Should be able to get something off of the pump to see what it is.

Why not run a belt driven saginaw pump? I have seen a few setups like that, and they seem to work alright. Think you would have to go open center with an adequate cooler, but it might give you better results.

I run a PSC single ended 2.5 ram with a belt driven pump and a 10" derale multipass cooler on my crawler... works great and moves 40" tires with just 2 fingers on the wheel...

if I had it to do over I'd go with a double ended ram more for the packaging, it's tight under the front end of my crawler with the ram and tierod, there's a 16th of clearance between them at full lock.

Thanks Mike S, will definitely look into that option. The only good part about winter being so long here is it gives you plenty of time for research.LOL.Think I may also be adding an alternator to the mix as well to make the ignition a little happier
