Anyone know anything about heating systems? I just moved into an older house that is heated by a gas furnace with no A/C. I broke the original thermostat (the old kind with a mercury tube) and tried buying a new basic thermostat at Home Depot and cannot get my heater to work now. The pilot light is still on but when I adjust the heat lever nothing happens. There are only two wires coming from the wall that appear to be a white one and a red one. I attached them as directed in the instructions and set the weird little gold thing to .4 which is supposed to be for gas/oil heated homes and am still getting nothing when I adjust the lever. I've tried switching the wires back and forth and I'm no HVAC guy needless to say. Any help would be appreciated.

what brand and model T stat did you get. if its wired correctly from the furnace the red wire should go to the "R" tab on the T stat and the white wire should go to the "W" tab on the T stat. you could test the wires by touching them together where they come through the wall and see if the furnace fires up. then atleast you know the wires are good from the unit up to the wall

try jumping R and W at the furnace together. If the unite kicks on then it might be an isue with the existing wier it could of got dammaged with the removal of the old stat. How old is the furnace.

Thanks guys. I tried touching the wires together and the furnace does fire up. I connected the wires as you stated: Red to R and White to W. But the actual new t-stat doesn't do anything when adjusted. I bought a Honeywell CT31A thermostat just a basic one.
