Hub / axle?

Hey guys I was racing the other week and broke something in the front diff. So I lulled the axles out so I could still drive my truck. The hub bearing were fine before I pulled the axles. I drove it about 10 mile and then notice my brakes were getting soft. Well the pedal was. Brand new brakes. Well then I heard a pop like my brakes were dragging. Got it home. And I trashed a rotor and brake pads. And now both of my hub bearings are done. Would the axles not being in cause that? All I can think of is the back of the axle and the nut holding it on would help keep the bearing together. Just I thought and just trying to figure out why they went so fast. Rookie mistake I guess. Thanks for any help

Made that mistake once...

Still drove on the same "stock" rotors and brake pads for another year.

New hubs are pretty cheap through dmaxstore.com and they have a lifetime warranty.

If the bearings separate without the CV shaft installed, then what about 2wd trucks? They use the same bearings as 4wd.

IMO, something else is wrong.

I drove probably 50 miles without CV's when I broke my front diff, didnt have any issues? I was told my wheel was going to fall off, but the same wheel bearing on my truck is same as the 2wd's so I wasnt worried at all.

The new hubs from Timken will hold together without CVs in. The factory hubs will not!

And no, 2wd hubs are not the same as 4wd hubs on stock trucks. I've replaced them both.

The inner part that the splined end slides through is swedged out and then smashed flat to hold the two pieces together without a CV in there. Stock bearings are just pressed together and the CV holds them together.

Timken redesigned them close to two years ago. Now they only have to make one bearing for both 4wd and 2wd. I believe it will also fit 8 lug GM trucks from the 90s.

I have an old stocker and a new model at home. I'll take a pic and post it up.
