What do I need to find to identify if a tranny is a 5 speed or a 6 speed?

I have already gone to the allison website and ran the serial number and it did not say. Can I tell by dropping the pan and looking at the valve body?

SN: 6320028075
Date: 01F06

would the date be jan 06 or june 01 or am I way off?

I'm all excited at what I found :happy2: So far all it needs is a bell housing (cracked kindof like ben's) and a nsbu (rolled on side and broken). other than that looks ok on outside and even came with tc core. plus the best part, it was free :D i'll try to tear into it this afternoon if i have time and see what the guts look like. all i know so far is that its a 4wd and aside from the bellhousing the case looks good.

Never mind on this post. Thought you referred to your own in the truck. Not a core one.

If you can see the nsbu I would guess 5 speed. Iirc the nsbu is internal on 6 speeds. Mike correct me if i'm wrong.

just checked my trans, no visible nsbu :( bummer

so to make this work in my truck (six speed) i would have to do a full transgo, and swap valve bodies? what about the nsbu?

that sucks :( that thing was like a magnet, just hopped in the back of my truck this morning and begged me to take it home.

anybody need a 5 speed core and converter or want to trade for a 6 speed core?
