How much can you take off head?

Machine shop just called... they had to take off .008. Is this safe or too much? Using grade c gaskets.

Thanks for the info guys. So from what I gather I should get a valve job but can get away with not... money is very tight at the moment. Wasn't planning on/expecting this hg's to go... but hey, who is?!
