like what do they do how much are they used....im rebuilding my trans right now and i got the C2s out but the snap ring that holds the C1s in is being a pain, i just cant get it out, so what do C1s really do, i have after market ones but with the trouble its giving me i dont mind not replacing them if its not necessary, but i do have lots of metal shavings around the C2s and C1 clutch packs.

IIRC, the C1s are used in EVERY forward gear. Lose them and you lose the ability to move forward with the power of the truck.

well now i know that i need to get them out, any ideas on how to get that second snap ring out, i got the spiral one, but i cant get the second one out.
FWIW i had no forward gears when my trans let go.

Good thing you pulled them out. If you do not mind how did did you get the ring out. I am pulling my trans down in a week.

really small screw driver, bigger screw driver, hammer and 4 clamps to keep the pressure off of the ring....the problem im having now is getting the clutches off, i think they got so bad they warped a lil cuz i cant get em out, the new ones slid right on but i still have half of the old ones that wont come off.

The C1s are used in gears 1-4. I had my C1s do the same thing you are describing. I ended up using a pair of bent needle nose pliers to pry between the steel and the clutch to work the steel loose. Once it was loose I could slowly work it to the top and off the shaft. It was a major PITA.

Both. The steels had stuck to the shaft, and it caused them to bind up and hold even after the apply piston had released. I could no longer go forward when I pulled the trans apart.
