Wondering what years of motor are interchangeable for a '94 civic?

My sister shit canned the motor (1.6L I believe) in her civic a couple months ago, and I told her that I should be able to put in a new motor if she will fund the project. Ran it out of oil and some internal parts decided to become external parts and you can guess how that ended :( That being said, I don't know the first thing about them, other than that they're small and cheap compared to diesel stuff!! Just wondering what years are compatible, like drop in replacement pretty much. Probably just going to try and buy a used motor from a salvage yard or CL.

And are there any out of the ordinary special tools that a guy would need for the project? I managed a 12v swap into a chevy with a tool selection that would have most of you guys rolling on the floor in laughter, so I'd have to buy or rent anything real special other than just your basic hand tools.

Any help or advice you guys have would be awesome. :hug:

I did a few of those swaps for friends back in high school
basic hand tools and a cherry picker gets it done

If its a non vtec motor you can pick up any non vtec from 93-99 with minor - no mods to fit it

How does a person tell if it's a vtec or not? I have no clue how to tell. Will any 1.6L honda motor work, or does it have to be from a civic? I'd assume that they're all the same with just different accessories or tranny?

Yea, for the most part they will all interchange. Vtec is a variable timing on the camshafts. It's been years since I worked on one to tell you the details tho. May want to do some reading on Honda-tech.com, lots of swap info there.

The valve cover says or you can check your engine code its stamped on the block next to where it bolts to the trans in the front it should be a d15. ,d16. And the letter and number behind the d15 or d16 can tell you what motor ya got

So a d16 would be a 1.6 liter motor? d15 is a 1.5? Cool. I'll check out that forum too, and hopefully they'll have some stickies for the noobs to get edjumucated :baby:

Yes your right the first letter stands for the engne type
D=single over head can
B=dual over head cam
and there is a few others but there nut in civics
next is your displacement
15=1.5l
16=1.6l
17=1.7l
And so on
Next you will have a nother leter witch will tell you more on the type on engine if it has vtec or not
then there will be a number witch classifies the gen
