So I thaught my turbo was bad but had a mechanic tell me I had a big hole in my downpipe. No big deal I have a 3" down pipe laying around. What confuses me Is it's got crappy bottom end power and doesn't seem to be building as much boost as normal. Too end seems fine. Truck runs good fuel mileage seems normal. Egts are 800-1200. What do you guys think it is or is it a symptom of the hole in the DP. Thanks for the input

Hole in the down pipe should not affect performance.

You may have leaks in the boost tubes/boots, that would affect performance.

How old is the fuel filter.

Let me guess you had a diamond eye DP? Mine broke where the mounting tab was.

As for the poor performance what is the boost peaking at and have you inspected your boost tubes lately?

Low boost usually is accompanied by high egt's... Same goes with exhaust leaks. I would definitely look over the air side of your engine but my guess it's fuel related. Have a look at rail pressure...

Is there a new tune in the truck?

Checked balance rates there good. Fuel rail preasure is good. Egts are a little high and all boots look good. I run cat filters under the hood and changed it bout 2000 miles ago. Not sure what's goin on. My edge insight shows the vanes 9% at idle and soon a u hit the throttle it goes straight to 70% no matter what the throttle position. Not sure if this is normal or what. And my efi live is programed to have vanes open at idle. Hope someone can tell me what's goin on. Thanks

Hmm... Can you pressure up the air side (boost tubes & innercooler)? Are you sure the exhaust leak is the down pipe and not a up-pipe?

Have you seen the hole in the downpipe yourself? did the mech get mixed up and its a hole in the up pipe? just a thought.

Yea I didn't see it myself but I think it's either the up pipe or the vanes causing the power loss but there is deff an exhaust leak up pipe or down pipe.

I found my exhaust leak by having a very trusted friend stand on the brakes and load up the engine untill smoke started seep out of it,which was at the egr delete plate. Mine sounded like someone blowing on a metal reed, that is what a leak at a gasket starts out as....

Mine did the same strange sound. looking at a tune i dont think 70% is odd for vane position especially if there is a lack of drive pressure and the turbo is not able to achieve the desired boost because of a leaking up pipe. and that would explain egt's and lack of power.
