Question: High Elevation Turbo Performance (5000 Feet+)

I'm looking for your feedback and opinions of performance of both singles (especially the s366 and s364) and compounds (NOT stock/475, looking for info on larger high pressure turbochargers) at substantial elevation. I live at 5,000 Ft. AMSL and regularly travel (with a load) to 8,000 Ft.

-Application: lb7, DD, built motor/trans, 30% overs.

-Goals: Actually be able to drive it everyday, pull whatever I hook to it, and beat it up for a long while to come. I don't expect 11 second time slips, I just like to ride the dragon on the street like everyone else on this site.

-Mini/Bonus rant: When I say DD, I mean I want to be able to use it as a truck everyday. My truck is rarely unladen, but it also rarely sees above 20K gross. Especially after the last DOT violation....when I go illegal, I go way heavy.

So, who has a s366/s480 and has flogged it up high? :dancenana:

I think and s364.5/71/.91 with an s480 would be a quick spooling setup

I ran the BD supermax (64) for a long time. I liked it. Then I put the s480 with it and that was cool too. Then I had HTT convert the 64 to a 66 and run the 66/480 setup. Just towed 8k up to Denver from ABQ and didn't phase my truck. Of course I'm on 60 overs and twin CP3s but I did use a low tune.

How about trips?

Was the ingermax in Colorado on Friday? I'll swear you passed me on I25 northbound by Loveland. I saw UNM plates...

Trips have been intriguing due to the snappy spool up of the atmos. Maybe someone with a set will chime in.

What were the stats on the exhaust side of both those chargers? The 364/66 and 480?

I could spool my trips on a stock fuel system with no issues. Had a few people with big twins ride in the truck and they were surprised at how easy the primaries would light

Most S366 turbos have a 73mm turbine wheel and .91 T4. The S480 would be a 96mm turbine with 1.32 T6

^this is mostly correct except the 64/66 has always been T3. Russ (Yellowchevy) ported out my T3 when I had my motor built and I have PPE manifolds and up pipes now. I really think you should look into Trips. Not that you wouldn't like compounds, I just think trips would work better for your needs. I know what it's like to drive and tow at high elevation, it's no joke. My in laws drove to CO (from Minnesota) this weekend to meet us and they were out of breath just walking around lol. Towing the load in the pic below, I never saw more than 1150 deg going through the mountain passes!

My old setup was a HTT S366 T3 with a 71mm turbine 16cm housing. 50horse DDP nozzles and stock tuning when running over Eisenhower pass. Towing a trailer and/or camper. There were a few spots where I would have to manually downshift out of fifth to keep it spooled and EGT's down, but if I had just changed my shift points in the TCM a slight amount it would have been like a stock truck. EGT's would never get over 1200°.

Here's a vid running through the tunnel showing how easy it spools at 11,000ft. It would have been smokeless as well but the turbo was on it's way out.

Guess that depends on whether you run it internally gated or not. The internally gated T3 will make plumbing the compounds easier. That's for sure.

Think I'm going to run the new HTT 64.5fmw with a 70mm turbine wheel and 14cm T3 housing as a single on my stock fuel and add a S475 to it st some point.

is the 66 a little too close is size to a 75mm for a compound setup?

I really wanted to take Scooder through that tunnel while we were there. Stupid women and their shopping. Castle rock outlet mall was a damn zoo. I did manage to get diesel across the street for 3.53 though lol
