Help with my 2002 slow fuel fill

Well I just purchased the truck about two weeks ago and well let me say that filling it up is not a fun task. I basically have to squeeze the fuel lever a quarter inch and keep it there for half and hour to fill up the tank... I looked up online on this forum and others and read that the vent tube might get kinked... After taking a look underneith I didn't see any kinks in the vent tube whatsoever. I did see that the big rubber fuel hose was severed and then put back together using some kind of union and hose clamps... Could that be the source of the problem? If it is how can I go around about fixing that?

Now from taking a good look at the underneith and inner fenders I am starting to have second thoughts about this truck. Mechanically it's in amazing condition but it has sooo much rust it's unbelievable. I knew about the rocker panels which basically need to be most probably cut right off and new ones installed but I sincerely didn't think the rust extended inside the rear fender wells. I guess I really have to close my eyes and remind myself that it's no show truck and to get it fix it as it goes really bad. Anyways I have to do something about that filler neck since I seriously don't want to loose my hand from frost bite! Any help is appreciated

Honey Goo. Spray it on but wear a respirator or you won't be right for a couple days ;)

I had the exact same problem. Finally broke down and bought the above kit. Fixed everything.

Good looking kit but a little pricey IMO. I just set it to the first click and pull it out a bit from the fill spout and it works fine. Gives me time to clean windows, mirrors and lights!:D

Summer time I don't even fill through that hole anyhow, I just fill it through my sliptank.

That's the problem I can't even set it up to the first click on the regular nozzles! I have to actually regulate it so when I see the least amount of foam coming back up stop and then go again at a very slow pace. I kid you not it takes 30 minutes to fill.

I am seriously looking at the transfer flow kit but I have a few questions. What is involved in installing that kit? Does the tank need to be dropped? Would if fix my problem with my hose that has been cut and then put together with a union maybe 18 inches away from the filler neck. A picture of inside the fender well where the filler neck is looking at the whole hose would help tremendously.

Thanks in advance,
Simon

I installed the Transferflow fill neck years ago. You could also punch out the inner anti-foam tube and get the same results fitting a larger pump nozzle.

No matter what you can only go one two clicks or it just builds up foam and kicks off the pump. The last 2-3 gallons to top off the tank are a pain in the ass IMO. The only way to increase flow is to increase the vent size and deal with the foam.

Take the fill neck off and punch out the inner tube this will help flow (vent) but increase foam. No matter what unless you go with a transfer tank in the bed it will never be a fast fill.

Do you have to drop the tank to install the fillneck? How much of the hose does get replaced? I think it has to do with the fact mine has been cut and then re-attached with a union so if I can get something that is long enough to get to that point which replaces it (about 18" down the hose) then it would work. I am seriously thinking about the transfer flow even if that means I can only go one click.

I got your pm but figured I would anwser the questions in here for all to see:hug: Mine was the EXACT same way. Took at LEAST 30 minutes last year to fill my tank......I have owned my truck for about 5 years and have only truck pulled and drag raced it up until last year. it never bothered me cause i was always putting in like 5 gallons of fuel at a time. When the fiance and I went on a drive last year and I filled the tank up for the first time in 5 years I was cussin like a MO FO. I said F$%k the dumb shit this is stupid. Found the transfer flow kit and said, That is frickin outragious in price but fixed all the problems. IIRC it comes with a complete filler neck assembly. I don't think you use anything from the factory fill neck. You do NOT have to drop the tank to install this!!!!. Kit was worth EVERY penny after the install:) I will try and get pics later today. Truck is down the road from the house

On a side note, Mine didn't have anything on the inside of the stock filler neck. Don't know if someone modified it already but it was gutted. It didn't have a vent tube though. Anyways all is good now. And when the fuel kicks off now the fuel doesn't come back and splash all over you:thumb:

No as said you do not have to drop the tank. You have to remove the fill neck (easy) and the fill hose (fairly easy).

You cut out a short section,3" I believe and fit in a new piece with a vent barb. Reinstall

I punched out the plastic piece in the fill neck which restricts the pump size that will fit into the fill. My guess is this was GM's idea of a anti-foam device and vent. That's the problem with the stock unit is there is no good vent.

Mine works ok but I cannot punch the pump without geeting a over load of foam. Maybe I should have left in the plastic piece but I needed to extra girth for pump nozzles. My only complaint is the foam. Filling up is pretty fast .

I definitely feel it's worth the money. The instructions are very good also . Avery simple task I did it in my driveway one evening.

I had a write up with pictures on another site but for the life of me I cannot find it there.

Thank you very much for taking time to take the pics EC33 it's extremely appreciated! I will order the kit pronto to fix that issue. At least I will be able to use the first click on the hose for sure! Again thanks man you made my day :)
