Heads machined .020

I took my lly heads to get machined. when I got them back the heads were rough and I was told they need to be almost a glass finish. So he sanded it smooth. We started putting the engine back together and my buddy who is doing the work said he didn't have enough clearance between the valves and piston. Took it to another shop so they could measure everything and it came back that the shop took .020 off. Any ideas on a fix since the c grade gaskets aren't thick enough or are the heads trashed now.

Time for heads.. That's twice the service limit.. Supposedly a grade e gasket I think, it's thicker. I went through this with the machine shop a while back. Ended up talking the heads back and having them recess the valves, but it was near the cost of reman heads.

Corbin, are you talking about the FelPro 26406PT and 26405PT, which are .047 thick?

Grade D is double a C I believe.

Heads are toast. Bitch that shop out, I had sane thing happen and they bought me a new set of heads.

We did some research and people said that there could be alignment issues with a gasket thicker than the C. The new heads are going to be around 1000. And 600 to sink the valves.

I'm not looking to pay for either. At least not the full amount. This head job is going on 3 months now because of the machine shop and finding time to actually work on it.

So will the Y bridge be a problem now no matter what gasket I use because he took .020 off the head? if he recesses the valve seats .010 - .015 and I use the c grade gaskets would that work? Or is that to much for the valves to be recessed?

Just get new heads and you don't have to worry about anything.. It's $400 more for a hell of a lot of piece of mind

I'm just trying to make sure that when I go into the shop I can explain to him why there is no fixing them or that it's just not worth it. I'm sure he is going to try to get out of replacing the heads and try to say they are fine I just need different gaskets. But he machined them .020 when at most they should be machined to .010 right.

The valves could be recessed, tipped and the intake runner side could have .010 taken off and they will work. That's not the way you want to do it. I would ask them to replace the castings since they obviously didn't know enough about what they are doing.

The machine shop told me that heads are not all the same and that maybe both heads must have been smaller because he only took off .012. Not the .020 the other shopped measured. I asked if he measured them first and he told me he shouldn't of had to. Now he wants me to pay for used heads out of a scrapped truck and he would machine those for free. Id be out another 600 for used heads. Maybe I'll try small claims court and just buy new heads for now.

yeah thats a crock of shit. they may not all be the same but it would something much smaller in variance than .01. i would say closer to .0001-3 in variance between new heads and overall heights

He was just trying to explain away his shitty work. I told him I didn't think that new heads could be that far off and he just kept denying that he could have taken that much off. I asked him if he wanted to measure the heads again to confirm what the other shop measured. He said he didn't need to because he knows how much he took off. Worst experience with a shop so far.

You could get your valves resessed like I did, it costs a good bit to do, or go to vista print.com and get 500 business cards for 10 bucks saying how awesome that machine shop was and hand them out all over town.
