Wouldn't be the first time. They would much rather have us there standing by, rather than calling after shit hits the fan and waiting for us to get there. Thats just how it is in our line of work.

I know last year I lost power twice for more than 4 days each time. I know all the power companies are just trying to cover their asses after last winter(lost a lot of customers in my area). I understand that these things happen but there are plenty of people that have nothing better to do than bitch.

One thing those of us that live on the gulf coast learn is you don't take chances when it comes to hurricanes. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. And...it doesn't take a direct hit to cause lots of problems.

You guys that are heading out to help be safe.

Actually I kinda hope we lose power, so we get to put some hours on this guy. :D

We live in the middle of nowhere so we are always the last to get power restored. After last year's storm when we had no water (400' deep well, needs a pretty big pump) or anything for 11 days my dad finally decided to put in a generator.

It was a fun weekend project, but drilling through the house foundation sucked. Even using a big Hilti, I still went through many bits and chisels. Since the newer generators are all digitally controlled with PLC's, the control wires have to be in separate conduit from the main power wires which is annoying, so the hole through the foundation had to be pretty big.

Pouring the concrete pad also too a lot more bags of concrete than I originally estimated...

Its a pretty cool machine though, 10-15 seconds after the power goes out it starts up (propane) and switches over. Even with 2 central AC compressors, a 220v clothes dryer, well pump, and several 220v woodworking machines all running at the same time, it doesnt struggle at all and according to my multimeter it steadily keeps the AC frequency between 59.98-60.11Hz so no problems running computers and stuff.
