Allison 5sp: Goodwrench (Dumb Question)

Previous owner of my truck(see sig) had a GMPP protection plan on the truck, and took it in for a drivetrain noise complaint. For whatever reason, they replaced the transmission with a Goodwrench. When it still made the same noise, they replaced the transfer case. That was at around 75,000 miles.

This Goodwrench trans is working great for me still, now has 140,000 miles. But if I run my hottest tune from Steve, it will limp in 5th, and maybe 4th, but it's been so long since I ran that tune I don't remember. So I'm planning to have the trans built.

So I wanted to ask the experts here if building a Goodwrench trans should be handled any different than an untouched factory unit? Maybe it's a dumb question, but I searched and found nothing. Thanks in advance. :)

I've opened many different remans from all manufacturers and they leave a lot to be desired. Some of that shit would never leave my shop.

I'm glad you posted, Mike. What type of things should a guy be looking for?

Or should I just send it to you when the time comes?

Oh, I won't be building it myself. Just the R&R. I'm really just trying to learn, and avoid potential future problems that happen when you start a build with a "bad" core. If I'm better off to start with a completely stock untouched core, I'll talk to my buddy that owns a local wrecking yard here.

As long as you have someone who knows what they are doing build it your current trans will be just fine to use.

Another dumb question that's probably already been covered...

If my buddy has a 6 speed Allison, what would I need to do that swap? Would there be any good reason to even consider the swap? Improved hwy MPG's or improved strength?

My truck will never be more than 450-500 hp, and even that is a generous number.

There is a lot involved with that swap. I personally would stick with what you have. Others here know much more than me on that swap, and they can tell you the details.

Its not that big of a deal to swap either way. Vavlebody, internal harness, safety switch, and cooler line fittings or swap bellhousings. You will still have a 5 speed if you are putting a 6 into a 5 speed truck. That is controlled by the tcm.

Oh, I thought you could swap in the 6 speed and have it work as a 6 speed...

I figured it was a dumb question, LOL!

Nope but ppe has a kit to do that with a modified vavlebody and custom tcm. Do some reading on it most will tell you it's not worth it. The 6 speed is a little stronger than the 5 in comparing both in stock form.

The PPE 6 speed kit is a Suncoast. SoCal Diesel has a great kit that I tested.
