good deal on a 95 diesel dually?

Shopping with the wife today I came across a 95 reg. cab dually, it has almost 70k mileage A/C automatic, power evrything and 4WD. The body is almost perfect with very little flaws. there asking 5k but i could probably get for between 3500 or 4k.

now for the problems the truck runs but itll stall for no reason it will start right back up and run till it stalls again, the turbo has a lot of oil on the exterior other then that the engine is pretty clean.

I wanna buy the truck to pull my 20ft gooseneck and leave my crew cab in the garage.

Is there anything else I should look for? any other problems that are common for this year/type diesel engine? any comment good or bad are greatly appreciated thanks in advance!!

That's pretty low miles - guess it's hard to rack them up when you are surrounded by water...:)

The oil might be nothing more than the tuna can ($100 IIRC). The random stalling might be the PMD going out. The fix for that is about $700 from Heath. There are cheaper ways to go with the PMD, and there are cheaper causes to some of the same symptoms.

The '95 does not benefit from the 97 change-over to dual thermostats and an ho waterpump, so I would keep an eye on temps. I like my '95 just fine, you might be pleased with one as well...

whats the PMD and is it easy to change? what about the tuna can is it also esay to change?

im thinking of going to the dealer with 3k cash and buying it as is so id have to change out the parts myself

Tuna can is super simple. Basically the 6.5 version of the 6.6. PCV called the CDR (crankcase depression regulator I think) and sits on top of the passenger side valve cover. You can't miss it, it looks, well, like a tuna can....

PMD (Pump Mounted Driver) controls the IP. It's a bitch to get out without removing the upper intake. Ironically, the good news is that if it is bad you just abandon it and get an extension harness, heat sink and new driver and mount it out of the engine bay. It then magically becomes called an FSD (Fuel Solenoid Driver)...

In both cases, you will want to do a full diagnostic of the issues before you start throwing parts at it, but neither of those issues are deal breakers on a '95 for $3K in my mind. If you get it and need help let me know, there are a lot of guys that know the 6.5 much better than me, few of them are here however....
