After a very long and casual rebuild to a core 2001 Ally, I just finished installing it with a ML converter. I did a fast learn with the Tech 2 once it got up in temp and I think it completed the drive test ok  Everything seems perfect and have got a few miles on it, some in T/H mode. Gone for another test drive :D

This is a very satisfying project to have accomplished with no apparent problems :thumb:

Special thanks to all who advised me including; Trent, Mike L, The Fermanator, and Jarasic. Also Stuntheavy the balcony star ;) wherever you are.

Advice?

I've noticed a slight 'warble' vibration about once a second while the trans is in Park and Neutral only.

My diagnosis:

The C5 clutch is engaging the P3 Planetary. The planetaries had a noticeable wear point on each tooth:

The P2 ring gear showed no noticeable wear. After much thought I reassembled

This trans came out of a service vehicle (65,000 miles) which very likely idled A LOT and was in mint shape otherwise.

I'm planning to swap in my now spare P3.

Does that diagnosis sound good?

Can I just replace the P3 ass'y while its in the truck?

Planet isn't turning sitting still.

I'll do more reading this weekend but what WOULD be the wear parts in Neutral?

No, you have to pull it out or else you'll never get the torrington bearings to stay in place.

I hadn't thought of that, Transgel wouldn't work? Oh well, from the start I prepped myself for two kicks at the can for the first time.

Would like to get a good idea of what's causing the vibration though before I go in.

I'll cut the filter open but if its fine I need to use the truck for a trip.

When I get back I'll take it out and replace the gear sets with my original ones but welcome any info:

What are the wear parts in neutral?

Can a vibration like that be caused by the increased line pressure or anything other than the gear train?

Thanks, Rod

Maybe the torque converter???? Could the extra weight and the clutches on a triple disk cause a slight vibration in neutral or park? Just speculating.

There is nothing wrong with your planet. The gears are cut that way for noise reduction. You would never feel a vibration from within the trans unless it total exploded a gear train and probably not even then. Out of ballance converters will vibrate more in nuetral and park and it will shake the steering wheel. Good chance you have a metal tometal contact underneath like an exhaust hitting frame .

I just got back from my first trip through the mountains with it loaded. :D:D:D:D:D:D

I hadn't even used it with the twins so it was VERY much improved. I had to brake on the Coquihalla snowshed hill for traffic but cleared the top out of Merritt to Kamloops at 80 MPH! :cop:

All guages were safe; 39 psi and 1200* were maximum readings

Trans worked perfectly. I lost no coolant and made no oil :nanawrench: 14MPG hand calculated :woott:

Thanks to all again (see post #1) :thumb:
