Got a call from my brother earlier. He works for Harley at GM's desert proving grounds in Mesa, AZ. He asked me if I would take a brand new duramax and allison. HEAL YEAH I would!!! Well they're throwing them away right now, but of coarse he can't take anything. He went on to say they just got done crushing about 40 cars and trucks, including 3 ZR1s and a few CTS-Vs and new STS-Vs. They're about half way through around 400 engines, most of them still in crates. There's a ton of transmissions and other stuff too.
WTF!!!!

WHAT THE HELL???

Ill take any of the stuff they think is worthless. All those parts would be so nice to have. Not to mention a brand new duramax for next to nothing would be awesome.

Most of these are what we call Pilot jobs,There ran with dealer plates only and driven to test for running issues and wind noice and water leaks.

The cars happen all time. They are built for testing things. The manufactures cannot by law sell them or give them away, they have to be crushed so there is no way they make it onto the road.

I don't know about law, but I know they don't sell these rigs drivable because of liability. They sell them to salvage outfits like Shram in MI all the time. I know Ford sells test vehicles after they cut them in half. I know a guy that bought a Mustang this way. It's a total waste to just chuck new engines...

While it is sad, think of the things other corporations throw away perhaps things that costs millions of dollars. I bet this is small in the whole scheme of things. I know just about every other day I throw 87 $100.00 bills down the garbage disposal just so my ex wife doesn't get it :D

Yeah, I've seen Millions of dollars worth of equipment dropped in the ocean from Navy ships. Pallets full of unopened desk top computers, brand new pumps, hydrolic units...

Some may or may not know but my line of work is landfill design, yada yada yada.... anyways, I was working at one the other day doing CQA work for methane gas well drilling and we were right beside the active face (where they are currently dumping the loads of waste being brought in). One of the loads was a tri-axle dump truck from Easton, the ball bat company. The landfill operator said they've checked to see what some of the bats are and some of them had price tags in the $800-900 dollar range and EVERYONE OF 'EM has to be hit by the compactor (the thing with spikey wheels and a blade on the front to pack in the waste). I asked if I could grab one for a tire kicker and was greeted with a BIG f-u. He said if any of those bats were found on a ball field somewhere some day, HE (or whoever signed off on the form to receive them) would be PERSONALLY responsible not the person with the bat AND could be fine up to $25K and 10-yrs in the pen. Not to mention that scavenging is illegal anyways.

I left well enough alone. :(

Stuff like this happens all the time. Being in the bourbon capital of the world, yes, even get loads of it in from time to time. The local SHERIFF comes down for that one and watches EVERY bottle or barrel get crushed. Same deal with computers, appliances, etc.

In some places, the fed. gov't has their own landfills and wow, some of the stuff they throw away is new or at the least, still very useable.

Most of this stuff is thrown away for ins. reasons. I'm sure some of the bats had some flaw or sweet spot or something but why couldn't they melt 'em back down? Recycle the metal from the cars, etc.???

I know what you mean. A local Tractor Supply retail store, not gonna name names here, had a metal box that was dented. It can;t be sold so there option is beat it further and throw it away. My buddy said I give you half the price for it. Nope can;t do it. Then give you scrap value. Still big NO!. We must beat it up and throw it in the dumpster. He said don;t beat it up but throw it away and I come by later and get it. NO F*****G WAY. We can't do that. And one wonders why somethings cost as much as they do. Imagine how much stronger are economy could be if we just used common since.

Well said Bryan.

While at work at Timken they had new front Wheel bearing assemblies that were spun on a machine for a few hours, they were perfect, but had to be scrapped so they wouldnt be used on the street, I tried to get them, no avail.

What a waste!! Its the Lawyers Faults!!

You can thank the lawyers in this country for all of the above.
One more thing. If whatever piece of salvage you were able to get and it turned out to hurt, mame, or kill someone or a family member; can you honestly say you would never ever hire an attorney and sue the shit out of the manufacturer? You cannot answer this question untill it happens and I'm betting 9100% of you will.

I used to work at the Goodyear Proving Grounds here in San Angelo. they cut thousands of new tires every year that were for testing only. some don't even have DOT numbers.
they used to let the employees take them, but like everything else, it was too great of a liability. they would often compare Goodyear tires to competitor's tires, which were baught off the shelf, and they would cut them too. every once in a while, a set would be thrown in the cut pile uncut :secret:

you can see the tire wall from Google Maps:

in Satellite, find San Angelo, TX. follow Hwy 277 just North of town and you will see a jumble of tracks. it's 7250 acres of tracks and hunting land.
in the middle of the jumble of roads is a big rectangular, flat pad with triangles on both ends...they used this for skid testing and hydroplaining. just north of the track on the north side of the pad is a road with a big black line running along side it. those are tires.
i forgot how long that stretch is, but it's something shy of a mile. those aren't all of them either, they ship most to Akron.
