GM Ends Production of Medium Duty Trucks
 August 3, 2009

As reported by our friends at Automobile, the last GM medium duty truck rolled off the assembly line last week in Flint, Mich. The white GMC Top Kick C7500 was the 205,790 GMT-560 built during an eight-year production run.

GM had been in negotiations with Isuzu and Navistar to sell its Top Kick and Chevrolet Kodiak Class 5-7 commercial truck business but a deal was never closed to save the line.

Ford and Chrysler have found success in this segment with medium duty pickups and chassis cabs that are closely related to their three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups. Even Nissan has announced its intent to try to gain a slice of this lucrative business. Could GM eventually return to the segment with a new offering similar to Ford's and Chrysler's? Stay tuned.

In the meantime, we'll raise a toast to the last of GM's large work trucks.
