So I drove my truck to work yesterday with no problems at all and came out after work and it was totally dead. Ran back in and got my meter and checked the batteries and both were at .15V. I thought my meter was acting up so i got a coworkers and checked with the same result. Got a skidsteer to jump the truck with. Hooked up the cables to the skid first and went to put the cables on the truck and the negative terminal was arcing like crazy without the positive hooked up. Checked to make sure i had them on the skidsteer correctly and I did. Checked pass side battery and it was shorted internally, tried drivers side and it was also shorted. Very odd since i drove it to work and had no issues. Got new batteries today and put them in.
almost immediately the glow plug relay started melting and burning so i unhooked the batteries. unhooked the battery cable on the relay and hooked the batteries back up and everything is fine.
Any ideas on what happened? Relay killed the batteries or weird coincidence? Also with assuming the relay drained the batteries Would something be in place to shut the glow plugs themselves off or were they on until the batteries dead? Wondering if I should pull them out or not worry about it.
For those wondering, Yes skidsteer loaders are 12V not 24V.
