Definitely use copper anti seize. It will definitely save you some headaches in the long run. I use copper anti seize on all bolts that go through a bunch of heat cycles.

Why do you say that John? I've been having problems with my glow plug controller and was thinking about getting rid of the whole setup as I have gotten used to plugging it in when its cold out, but if there's a good reason I might have to figure out the problem.

I ran no glow plugs all last year, but my crank broke before it got too cold, i think at scheids it got down to the 50s early in the morning, i might have had a upper 40s start but thats about it. It always started fine, but i can imagine it wouldnt have if it got much colder.

My truck starts OK with out the glow plugs down to about 50. Below that it gets cranky. Using the glow plugs cures that. Even on warmer days the glow plugs help smooth out the idle right after starting. Plugging is great if you can. My truck is track/trailer queen. I tow it to pulls sometimes a days drive away. So I would need lots of extension cords to keep it plugged in.;) It has been as cold as in the 30s and with the glow plugs it fires right up.

I don't get it why is there a tip on it

I know that even a small change in a duramax combustion chamber can effect compression ratio.

I don't know if this is the reason why or not but it seems to make sense that if you remove the tip from the "dummy" glowplug, you could end up lowering your compression a little. Combine a little lower compression with no glow plug and you just made starting that much harder. Keeping a tip on the "dummy" plug will keep you from affecting your CR. Since it does not heat up, there shouldn't be any issue of it breaking off inside the chamber...

Again, this is speculation. DPR would be the best source for the answer.
