First you need to look for cracks. They can be very small at first, but a wirewheel or sandpaper will make them visible. They always start at the lip inline with the wristpin.

You will wirebrush the piston lands lightly as well to remove carbon buildup. Break a ring in 1/2 and use it as a groove cleaner. Don't get nuts with the wirewheel. You need to keep the lathe marks to promote oiling on the skirts.

Look for sharp edges and burrs and remove with fine file.
