Lets discuss making a Duramax last at 5,000 rpm and 1000 hp. Continuous duty cycle (min of 6 hours).

My machine shop said as a daily driver it wouldnt effect it at all. I guess I will find out :D
IIRC the 1000hp duramax's are not over 4000rpm

BTW, I mean making 1000hp for 6 hours straight with any breaks (boat engine). I think one of the biggest concerns is heat. Raw water cooling could be used to our advantage. Cooling of the turbo, Water to air IC, and Oil cooler. What kind of provisions should be used on a motor with raw water cooling.

Who is making 1000hp or close to it?
Max'd out, Nasty girl, McRat

I dont think there is a built Dmax out right now that can take the abuse I speak of. This would be a first. As a matter of fact I dont know of a Cummins that can either, but I dont keep up much with those boys.

We may be able to work around that rpm figure, ie using a gearbox to limit engine rpm.

So why can a gas engine survive and Diesel's cant? Is Banks having trouble with there road race engine? that would have to survive a long time

R15 TDI's are this...not quite 1000hp but less displacement then our motors as well....24 hours in fact:D

those would be the engineers to figure this out for you

kuselicks 3.0 truck, jay's (1badmax/whitedmax), and i'm sure there are a few DPR builds out there making a solid 1000 hp....Curtis would have a wealth of knowledge to add here

Those engines are not performing the same duty cycle. Those are on / off the throttle. A marine engine typically sees a much higher on the throttle duty cycle than a road race car.

My guess is that you will need some monotherm pistons first in order to sustain that kind of power for that length of time. Marine engines do get an excellent break on cooling (60 deg F water vs. 100+ deg F air) and can be used to its advantage with regards to keeping the boost and engine cool. But if you can't keep from melting the pistons, well, game over.

Possibly more CID. Most of the marine gas big blocks in the 1000hp area are 598cid or larger and supercharged at that.

The title should read 1000 prop shaft hp, sorry. Just so use to things with wheels.

Exactly, that what I want to know.

it is a combination of things.... first is that 1000hp Duramax's are not widely seen yet. Parts cost so much more than BBC or SBC, the marketability of 1000hp diesel engines is terrible in comparison to its relative the gas engine. I doubt we will ever see the capabilities of a long life 1000hp diesel engine unless prices of parts come down. We also need to see what parts fail and make them better... steel pistons need to be made, appartantly that seems to be our weak point
