So my dad is the new owner of a 2006 Silverado with a 4.8 with a Magna Charger. I have him talked into doing a little more work to it, but I don't know much about these things. The truck already has some shorty style headers and some sort of fuel return that crosses from one fuel rail to the other. What would be a good cam to use?

Talk to Pat G from LS1Tech.com. Here is his build sheet. He charges $25 to spec a cam just for your setup and then Comp Cams grinds it for $399.

Is he adamant about keeping that 4.8l in there? If it were me I'd take it out and throw in an LQ4/9 and throw some heads on it along with a cam. Keep the spinner and you got a monster of a truck. You can find these LQ4/9's all day around here for around $1200 with 50K or so on the clock.

Just a thought.

The guy he is getting the truck from has an LQ4 sitting in the floor he was going to swap over to it, but I don't think he wants to put a ton of money in the truck. He wants a fun street truck to beat around in and maybe take to the track some. I figured with the blower on there the extra displacement from the 6.0 wouldn't be that big of a deal. I was thinking a cam swap, some springs and push rods would wake it up quite a bit.

Trust me he will WANT the LQ4. Easy swap. Read up on LS1Tech and PT about it. Remember the phrase There is no replacement for displacement? That 4.8l is nothing spectacular and is a DOG on low end. Only way Id run that motor is with some tall gears.

Just to keep it a street beater why not run the 4.8 with a little help on topend? Those are nice little runners for a lower buck truck/car when you just help it. Sure had good life out of a 2000 in a 1/2 ton GMC we ran hell out of for everyday truck. Sold easy when we did that too.

The 5.3,5.7 or 6.0 is the better choice for a swap. If you go with any of the iron block versions then to get the most out of it you would want to swap for heads off the aluminum block vettes. They can be killer motors with chargers, heads, cams, injectors and tuning.

Ditch the shorties and put a set of Doug Thorley Tri-Y headers on it, A Comp 220 cam with the .530 lift ( easier on the valvetrain than the .550), a Yank converter, some 4.10's, and a blackbear tune. That will make it fun, or put these on the LQ4 and have more fun.
