Gears and tires

I'm looking to run 35s this year, Kind of looking at Cooper S/T maxx, Cooper S/T or Hankook Dynapro M/Ts. I can't decide looking at the M/Ts if they will be to much, pictures almost make the lug spacing look closer than your average mud terrain.

The truck is already 4.10 gears and I was considering staggering the ratio with a 4.30 or 4.44 in the rear. Probably going to run a spool. I'm hoping I'll be in the 650 horse range this year.

Thoughts on potential tire choices and possibly staggering the gear ratio a bit?

Idk bout your dirt in your area but a popular M/T for pulling is the Goodyear Duratracs.

I pull on Clay and venture to some shit sand and stone dust tracks on occasion.

I'm trying to cheap out on tires :roflmao:

I did just look this morning at another wholesaler I deal with and see the Duratracs and BFGs are available and my price isn't much more than the Hangooks or Coopers.

I wouldn't cheap out on tires. If you pull a lot on clay why not run sts's?

I just don't wan't to be buried in an expensive set of tires I may need to sell if 35s don't work out.

And to be honest, I ran STSs and they really didn't gain me anything noticable over the cooper Zeons I run now, But I can't get those in 35s or anything close to it.

35's with 373's on clay would be perfect with 650rwhp for 3rd gear. 4.10's may be even better or could be to low for 3rd gear and rob to much wheel speed. I'm interested to see how this plays out for you! I definitely would run sts's on clay though JMO.

Man, having sprayed the truck plenty where allowed I'm just not sure its really going to be happy about 35s and 3.73s. When I went to the 4.10s, its definitely short wheel speed, but seem to make alot of difference with carrying RPM at the fairs with the 9000lb "open" classes.

I REALLY do want the STS's money is a bit of an issue though.

A split ratio will suck some of your power, but its not foreign to pulling at all.

What he said. Burkhard was running a split ratio in his 3.0 truck last year if that means anything to you.

I've never had the theory explained to me by somebody that knew what they were talking about, so I don't know in what situation split ratio will pull better.

Isaac please explain if you have a firm grasp of that theory.

The theory (as I understand it anyways) is "overdrive" the front wheels for more wheel speed up front, while still maintaining a little extra power when the pan hits out bacl.

Of course if I leave it matched gears, whether I stay 4.10 or go back to 3.73 I could attempt to plow snow with this thing again next winter. I'm kinda wanting to try something different, and my access to gears is border line unlimited.

Is it wishful thinking to think I could grab 4th with 33s and the HP I'm looking at? I guess I'm just thinking of the possibility of bouncing between 33s and 4th gear for the garbage tracks and 35s 3rd gear on the tight tracks.

I ran 4:10's and 35" BFG's at about 650hp and 3rd gear last year and
would hit my rev limiter at 4,300 on loose tracks. If I would have ran that set-up again, I would have switched to 3:73 and 3rd gear or 4:88's and 4th gear.

Yes it's wishful thinking with 373's with 33's at a true 650 Rwhp, simply not enough powa. 35's with 373's in 3rd gear is the best possibly setup for 650rwhp on both tracks. Biggest thing after you have that decided is tire pressure and how quick, and how good you are on the converter lockup switch on the tight tracks when the sled hits.

What kind of sleds are you guys pulling the fast running singer style sleds or big heavy slow sleds?
