I put ARP head studs and grade "C" head gaskets on my engine when I rebuilt it recently. I can push 70lbs boost. I feel alot more comfortable now that its got the head studs in it. My head gaskets have been going for a while now before the engine let go.

Just curious, lots of people say that with the head studs it has to be honed with a torque plate, is that right? So if that has to be done how do people get away with running studs with just the head removal? How many guys left the motor in the truck and added studs?

Only time i've heard of a torque plate being used in when installing main studs. I may be wrong, but i've never hard of anyone using one on head/block

that was one of my main concerns..and then a wise man said to me " nick, how many thousands of trucks had studs done with the motor in the truck and have had 0 issuies" so im just not going to worrie about it.

I would like to see some machine shop that has a torque plate actualy test the "real difference between the bolts/studs with a dial bore gauge. But I doubt someone would ever take the time to do it and if they do I'm sure it will be kept quiet since thats extra machine work that could be charged for :thumb:.

I'm sure quite a few people just stick the studs in and call it good, but it's common for the blocks to flex/distort with the new studs installed. iirc

The block distorts the cylinders after installing the ARP studs due to the extra force from tightening them

That being said Abbys old motor never had a tq plate on when the cylinder were honed and I never had issues with 90 psi of boost

How ever I did use plates on the new motor

There is a video on here that john boy did and npa dmax did Showing the distortion
