LB7: Fuel sending unit or stepper motor bad?

My low fuel light stays on and gauge reads empty then suddenly jumps back to normal vice-versa. It used to happen only when the tank was filled completely. Now, it reads empty with light on 90% of the time. How do I tell if it is my fuel sending unit or just the stepper motor going bad? Those sending units cost a lot more $$$ than I anticipated.

I don't know, but my mom's Trailblazer is doing the same thing. I'd be interested to know what you find out.

I don't think the stepper motor has anything to do with the fuel gauge. Mine is shot and my gauge reads fine even with my fuel cell.

Its the sending unit. If it was the gauge then the low fuel light wouldn't be on at the same time. Mine jumps all over the place and usually reads empty too. One of these days Ill put a new sending unit in, but for now i just reset the trip meter every time i fill it.

x2 I had to replace mine last year, I'm not smart enough to log my mileage, LOL :thumb:

But the lift mak life easier when I ran out of fuel
