OK gentlemen, allow me to pick your brains once again. I am having a fuel system issue with the wife's 02 Yukon and I was wondering if y'all could help me figure this out?

Symptoms:
1. When overfilled, gas runs out the top of the tank and down the sides pooling on the ground underneath the tank.
2. After every fill up and upon shutting the vehicle off after driving every time, strong smell of gas at the rear of the vehicle.
3. Will not do any better than 15 mpgs, period.

I'm thinking maybe the supply or return line has corroded and developed a leak, requiring a new fuel pump module. Am I thinking correct and do y'all have any other input or advice?

Thanks in advance
Corey

my thought would be if it was one of those lines leaking, you would have gas on the ground all the time, not just when tank is full.

if its only when tank is full, that would have me looking at sending unit seal, filler neck, etc. something that doesn't have a constantly supply of fuel in it

That's why Im thinking it is the return or vent line as I only see it after over filling and it smells so strong after filling up and driving it any.
To fix this issue, I know the tank has to come out so I will go ahead and replace the sending unit, o-ring & retaining ring, fuel filter. Anything else I need to look at/for while I've got the tank out?

Thanks again guys, this is truly the best group of guys on any forum, period!

Look at the filler neck. Where it goes into the tank it can develop a crack. Had to replace the tank on my '04 and both tank straps were fine. Good luck.

While the tank is down, you might look at the tank pressure sensor. My brother has replaced a few on the GMT800s in the last year, and if the part is cheap, it could save you from dropping the tank a second time in another year or so.

The pressure sensor normally comes with the fuel pump module on all the ones I have done.
