Fuel mileage concerns

As of late, my speedo is working again so my odometer is also working, i have been tracking my fuel mileage and am disappointed. This weekend with a combo of towing maybe 60-70 miles total, 200 miles unloaded city/highway I got 276 miles on a tank of fuel. The light came on last night and I put right around 23 gallons back in to fill it up. That puts me at 12 mpg. I cant for the life of me figure out why it is so poor. I would expect that if I was a dually, and towing 12k through the mts. I was towing maybe 8k for a small percentage of the miles. Any thoughts on this?

I have been trying to deny it in my mind for some time now, as I got to washington dc last summer and had to fill up. I am in ct and that highway trip was about 350 miles, for an average of 15mpg, all highway. That was using some efi live timing numbers in the cruising range that were much lower than stock (was trying to chase a noise i thought was timing rattle). I have since gone up from stock a little and havent noticed a difference.

I am leaving for myrtle beach in a few weeks towing my trailer there, would love to get a bit better than 12 mpg. thanks
