Hey everyone happy thanksgiving! Was wondering if I could get some feedback about fuel filter setup. Was thinking about putting a cat adapter on my stock filter head(nicktane) or whatever you guys recommend. My question is am I gonna have a flow issue w/ the new cat filter,am I gonna have to add a lift pump as well or do I keep the stock setup & add a fass or airdog w/a cat filter...someone told me that cat filters are available for the AD is that true? I guess the easiest for me would be the cat adapter & filter, what do you guys think? Thanks for the help:thumb:

You shouldn't have any flow issues. Only thing I don't like about the nicktane is you can't get a water separator similar to the stock filter (things may have changed by now). I also see you live up north and more than likely unless your diesel is treated well a lift pump hanging on the frame rail will gel up.

I run an AD with a Cat filter on it, only had to trim the bracket holding the pump. I also deleted the factory filter housing.

I treat every tank of fuel I run(opti-lube xpd) haven't had any issues w/gelling...I will however be headed out to AZ for the next three months(I've been able to do that for the past few years) so I won't be here for the real cold part of the winter...I just didn't want to change over to a cat filter setup & find out I can't get enough fuel while towing.... I guess what I was hoping for was to get some better filtration & then maybe down the line add a lift pump...I appreciate yours & everyone's input thanks

My setup is below.
http://www.duramaxdiesels.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33017

I live in the coldest conditions that anyone is running a diesel in besides some of the Canuks. The lift pump on the frame has nothing to do with causing the fuel to gel, it's all on how the fuel was blended between 1 and 2...

The Cat filters I run will out flow/filter anything your truck is going to ask for.

That's a sweet setup!!! I guess probably what I should do is just run what I've been running & maybe plan a setup like yours!! The only problem is I might need some advice cuz I'm just not that knowledgable...but I will tell you after seeing those pics that's what I want to do!!! Great setup!!!:thumb::thumb:

I read through that original thread & I see that you were thinking about moving the pump between the separator & the filter...just wondering if you ever did that & how is that ppe pump performing? Thanks

The filter adaptor from Nicktane works fine and you can get a water separator filter from Donaldson that fits the adapter. I am looking at setting up a lift pump and I'm probably going to keep the stock head with the adaptor as the secondary filter so if the lift pump takes a poop I can still prime the system if I need to.

PPE pump died after 1.5 years... I had to Mcgyver a BD Flow-max pump on down in the states. I never changed the plumbing to put the water sep filter pre pump...

When I put the built engine in it, I will redo the fuel system all at once. The setup it has now is working just fine with no issues. I might also add that Dan @ PPE asked me to send the pump back to him. I just never got it sent out.

It does work fine but the factory filter head is a piece of sh*t, eventually it will cause problems... Just make sure your Donaldson filter has an adequate micron rating. Cat filters are rated absolute, meaning they filter a majority of the particles at the rated micron from the start. Most other filters have to run for a while and plug up some before they start filtering at the filters micron rating.

That was my original thought was to get the adapter & install the cat filter...I really wasn't that concerned about the water separator seeing as I never really had any water accumulate in the factory filter setup ,the concern I had was w/the increased filtration would I encounter a flow issue w/my truck having 270k on it & the pump being original...however seeing the setup Burn Down has I'm leaning in that direction,I do like the idea of utilizing the stock filter head w/the heater & primer w/a cat filter w/ a cat separator & pump underneath

I haven't had any issues with my filter head other than the install of the nicktane adapter. I forgot to take out the check ball. oops btw if you add the filter adapter you may want to rebuild the head ..... it is simple and cheap to do.

You can do a search on here lots of people having issues with them leaking fuel/air, primers stop working, truck won't start...

:thumb: You all can carry on. I don't have that pile of crap under my hood anymore for a reason. I'm not getting stranded in the middle of BFE no where because my filter head needs rebuilt, F-that.

I rebuilt it at 110,000 miles because I had the head off not because of problems. The lb7 I had with 200,000 miles and 100,000 miles of that was me owning her and had no rebuild or problems. So truthfully I didn't put any though into it them being a pile of crap. Honestly the only problems i have had with either of my d-maxs was a leaky water pump on my lb7 at 180,000. I must be very lucky with my trucks because they have been great in general.:thumb:

I had no idea that there was that many issues w/'the stock head...I guess my question now is how do you prime your setup & what about the factory heater did you eliminate that all together?
