my dad has recently bought a 2002 d-max with the allison in it. Probably had it 2 mths? Any ways he said he started it and put it in drive and it made a clang when it went it gear, and then he went down the road and it would'nt come out of 1st gear. So i pluged my bully dog up to it to read dtc's and nothing came up. but the maintanice light is on?
This truck was owned by a older guy before my dad got it. He said that it never had any thing performance done to it. And its still got the factory muffler on it so i belive him?
Does any one know what it is? If i was guessing its some thing electronic, cause last week it shifted fine and strong? Ive heard a freind say some thing about limp mode if thats what it is how do you correct it?

What do you all think??? I was leaning towards NSBU switch but now that I think about it, I would have thought it not coming out of first would be a limp mode and should have thrown a code??? Maybe the bully dog doesn't read ALL codes?

Don't know what codes your Bully Dog can read. Might need to use a scan tool. Limp mode doesn't lock the truck in first gear. It will lock it into 4th gear but you will also get the codes that also generate the MIL light.

That quote above was posted by a friend on another board. The truck in question is his dad's. I don't have a Bully Dog and have no knowledge or plans of even seeing this truck.

Just wanted to ask a more broad group of more knowledgable folks on the subject for him since he drives a Dodge and isn't like a member of many or any GM/Duramax specific sites like I am. Just trying to help the guy out with some suggestions.

Yeah, I was thinking limp mode leaves you in 4th but I was thinking there was some condition, not sure if it's called or considered "limp mode", that won't let it out of 1st????

if the mill is on there is a code the bully dog probably cant pull up tcm codes... only ecm codes. get us a code and we can help . nsbu could make it think it is in 1st gear by the selector be a bit odd but not impossible... and limp mode locks the truck in 3rd gear not 4th .
