My 7.3 Powerstroke mud truck has tranny problems. Hoping someone here has experience here to save me from joining and asking a powerstroke forum.
I just got the truck. bought it not moving due to broken transfer case. I replaced the case and got it moving. All I know is the thing has 1, 2 and R but its not right. Being on 5 ton rockwell axles and 66'' v-treads i can't really road test it to see if I have 3 and 4 with lockup.
-Trans fluid super dark and smells (i knew this when i bought it)
-When shifting into reverse or forward gears it momentarily feels like the tcc is engaging. RPMs pull way down and tries to push through the brake. (also knew it did this)
-Pulled the pan and found a lot of very fine shavings stuck to the magnet and some metal pieces probably 1-2mm wide and 5-6mm long.

Obviously the trans is coming out which is a big pain in the ass with the subframe in the way. Is this a common problem with these trans and would this be a simple candidate for a first timers trans rebuild?

My 7.3 Trans was replaced 3 times on warranty if that helps haha. Luckily the last one has been holding up. It's got the 4r100 though.

I've never taken a e4od apart but they seem simple enough. Good thing is if you muck it up rebuilt ones are cheap. I say go for it.

E40D's are almost identical to the 4R100. They eat a lot of hard parts and are not cheap to fix. You will need special tools to do this. If you make a mistake, you will lose your ass on this one. A lot of modifications are needed for this trans. The Allison is nothing compared to building one of these. Good luck.

I said I never took one apart. I've seen some 4r100 apart though and it wasn't too scary. Good to know that they're that messed up though. Thank you.

Exactly what I needed to hear. Looks like I'll be having it rebuilt by someone if I decide to keep it in there. Definitely don't want to make pulling it a habit though.

Mike how are the c6 trans to rebuild?

I'm sure I'll have to look on the Ford forum for this info but I'm considering a c6 swap if feasible.

This thing will live between reverse first and second only and never see lockup. It'd be nice to have a simple old trans designed to never have lockup from the start. I'm sure that's a lot of the reason this trans crapped out.

C6 are a piece of cake. Very similar to the Dodge 727.

I've got some feelers out. It apparently has to be a c6 from an 80s idi 6.9/7.3. A gasser c6 had a different bell housing based on what I've found. I'll have to make a custom crossmember which isn't a big deal. Those 4x4 diesel c6 trans are hard to find.

We can do wonders with the C6 using the E40D gear train. It will lower 1st and 2nd gear for pulling power. Will need to use the R Cobra Jet servo. I was the first guy to do this with FoMoCo help way back when.

Just curious....what kind of power can a bad boy built c6 or E4OD hold in a diesel application?

I would say 600/800 hp. The weakness in the E40D is the skinny input shaft. The C6 must use an aluminum pan as it works like a girdle to keep the case from breaking. It's been a few years since I built big hp C6's.

After talking with my buddy I got the truck from he said it had been lugging down like that even before he put the big tires and axles under it. I have plenty of gearing in the truck post transmission. Almost 4.5:1 tcase and 6.72:1 axles. Engine is stock too besides exhaust.
Will a mildly built (just rebuilt with better bands and clutches and a stock converter) c6 with an aluminum pan and a manual valve body be up for the task or will I need to buy some high dollar hard parts and converter?

The E40D steel planets are not expensive and will have a better ration in 1st and 2nd. You will need a hardened rear hub and snap ring. R servo is a must and a stock converter will fail. I would also get a billet forward drum as the splines will fail.

Well after a week of going back and forth I've decided to just have the e4od built by a pro. I know me and I will not leave this truck stock so between added power and tires I'll kill a stock rebuild fast. There is a local guy that builds a lot of transmissions for these big Ford diesel mud trucks. Most are tuned on top of giant tires. He seems to have it figured out pretty well. Haven't read or heard anything bad about his builds. It's going to cost me more than I wanted to spend but at least I won't have to do it again (hopfully)
