From what I was told at the DMV, the weighted tags aren't really a "must" but rather had than not needed if you happened to carry a weight over 10,000lbs. Your truck should weigh approx. 7000 (just a guess). There was no in-between tag from 7000-10,000. Not worth the ticket from a prick cop IMO.

Just called the DMV because I have been curious about this myself. The standard vehicle tags are allowed for anything up to 4000 lbs - so basically anything bigger than a 2WD 1500 RCSB is going to need more expensive tags. They have private truck under 5000 and private truck under 6000 plates that cost more than the standard plates. Even a regualr cab long bed duramax weighs more than 6000 so technically you need 10K tags just for the empty truck. The guy at the DMV said that if you are hauling a trailer from time to time - a car to a race, your boat to the beach, ect - you should be fine with just having the weight of the truck covered. But if you haul stuff all the time you need to have the weight of everything covered. I think I need to get weighted tags since the lady at the DMV gave me standard plates and when I tow another DMax to races I'm at 16,500 +. :spit:

i have my truck weighted for 23,000. it used to be just a standard 10,000 plate but almost had a real issue with DOT so i decided to be safe than sorry.

just for your information i pay $341 and some change for my tag each year so if its gonna cost you $300 for a 14,000# tag u might be better off with the biggest tag you can get for a little more.

Just figured i would bring that up for you.

I think it's BS that we need weighted tags for personal trucks, especially while not even towing. 30,000 lb RVs towing 8,000 lb trailers get to run around on standard $28 plates. Ford Excursions are "station wagons" and also get to run on car plates.

You need to be covered, the way it's been lately pulling a trailer at all is a good way to get pulled and weighed. Since the troopers and dmv cops are the same now they don't have anything better to do than weigh pickups.

Holy crap!!! I think I just found the good thing about living here. I have one licensed at 18,000 local (90mile radius or something like that) that runs $18 a year and one at 24,000 beyond local (anywhere) that runs at $75 a year. It only costs $360 to license the end dump or lowboy for a year commercially here.
