So got a buddies truck here im workin on to return a favor for him helping me on some things in the past. truck is 2006 CC/SB 4x4 6.0L/4L80e, fully loaded

He brought it to me sayin it needed an alternator as the ALL the lights in the truck and outside the truck flicker faintly and gets worse as you rev the motor. So i told him before he goes buying the alt, lemme check it out first

So i went over damn near all the grounds i could find and cleaned them
checked for anything aftermarket in the truck and how it was wired (only thing found was a brake controller that is hooked up using factory connections), all was good
checked for bad wiring around the alt or any hot areas around the motor and couldnt find anything
checked battery and its in great shape
checked batt connections and issues there
checked for pinched or bad wires under the fuse block, nothing found

really couldnt find anything to justify something other than a alternator. So off to autozone i went with the bad one in hand. the one in the truck is 105 amp, well they only have 145 and 160amp alts so i picked up a 145 amp as it mounts the same and connects all the same and cost the same lol.

put it in the truck and same damn thing

i tried running some short big wire jumper cables to create a better ground to the batt, no difference
tried jumping straight from the alt power post to the positive of the batt, no difference
i then checked the input wire to excite the alt and it was only sending 11.2 of the 13.8v at the batt, so i back probed the wire and put direct batt power, made no difference

only thing i get is if i unplug the excite and signal wire from the alt, and rev the motor it wont flicker anymore. if i plug it back in, for about 30sec the lights wont flicker then they will slowly start coming back in again and flicker.

im really out of ideas guys. maybe this alt is no good either? i know ill have a fight on my hands if thats the case cause the idiot tester at autozone says the old alternator is good as well so i know they will play a game saying "well that one checks out just fine"

Did you try swapping batteries with a different one you have on hand, just to rule that out? It sounds like you've covered all your bases. Let me know if you need any help(physical)

How do the excite wire and signal wire plug in, is it possible to have a short in the wire plug/housing? Maybe clip the connection and install a new one?

Definately strange????

thanks tyson, i should be good though. not much else i can do besides swapping batts and thats pretty simple

yeah i tried that, back probed the wire with a thin metal and hooked altternator current of 13.8vs to it. didnt change anything. i back traced the wires all the way to the big ass wire loom and found nothing that could be causing an issue.

My money is on the battery, unless you have a corroded battery terminal. Swap yours in there as a test.

this is really the only thing i can think of as well. its a newer batt in there with clean terminal but it looks like one of them cheapo batterys.

Well swapped in my battery and issue is fixed. Tried his old alt with my batt and there was a little bit of flickering so it needs both a batt and alternator. Glad i know what the damn issue is though lol
