I'm heading out to lake Powell from here in socal. This will be the first time I'm towing with the truck. 03 extended cab 4x4. Since I'm new to diesel I've just got a couple questions. Boat is a 23' Nordic and I'm not exactly sure of the weight but around the 5-6k range. At this weight is the tow haul mode a must? I will be encountering a few good grades on the way? What rpm range should I be running? Normally in my gasser I towed around 70mph when I got out of California. Sorry for the new questions but I'm just not sure with a diesel truck. Thanks in advance

You really don't have to use it but the trans will be happier and cooler if you do. That truck will happily tow your boat at 90mph if you want to. But for mileage you're probably best to keep it at 65or 70

Just leave it in tow haul all the time. Seems to crisp up the shifts a bit and keep the converter locked which keeps temps down. PS show boat pics!

With that little weight, I would tend to leave Tow/Haul off in town (keeps the engine quieter, makes the throttle less snappy/aggressive) then turn on Tow/Haul once I get above 40 MPH (highway) and just leave it on.

There is no harm in leaving it on in town (trans will run cooler), so try it both ways and see what you like. These Allison transmissions are tough, so as long as you watch the temps, you won't hurt them. Plus, you may like the more responsive throttle that you get with Tow/Haul in town.

That's a nice boat, by the way :thumb:

Tow Haul and make sure you downshift to 4th for long hills. that will keep everything cool. My 03 loved 2300rpm on long hills, but I was on 33's
