Howdy!
This is my first post in a Duramax forum and I chose this place because it seems to be the best wealth of knowledge.
I'm a former Ford homer and got broke on a 6.0. Learned how to wrench on a modern diesel real well due to that truck. We bought it new in 04 and took great care of it and never modified it at all until 115k miles and it did the trifecta. Needless to say I fixed it all in house and then a year later sold it and took a beating. I went backwards and bought a old tired 7.3 IDI that has more hours than miles and the mileage is near 250k, I still have this truck thankfully.
Okay here's what I came here for:
In December I bought a 2006 LBZ 2500HD LT 4x4 Dmax, Auto with 185k miles on it. I'm the third owner and the first two were college roommates so I know it's history well. It was a well maintained truck but sat a lot of the last two years. I immediately put new fuel filters and ran a few tanks with sea foam just in case. Truck was running great I was converted to a Chevy guy. Then.....the truck started blowing black smoke like crazy and ran like a dog. I tow a little cargo trailer that weighs about 3k for my AC business and the ol IDI could pull it better. My fuel mileage went to hell and the cel came on. I got a whole plethora of Turbo boost codes, P0004, p2563, p2564 Etc. Truck has a Demon? Program in it running 80hp increase and a K&N Air filter otherwise stock. So I dick around cleaning the filter, running it hard, running it slow, etc and no avail. So I bite the bullet and pulled the turbo. Sent it to Majestic Turbo in Waco and had it rebuilt and also had a new solenoid and position sensor installed then. I decided to also put in a MBPR down tube because of the pain it was to get the factory one out with those dumb heat shields. Changed the oil in the truck and fired it up. Did a break in procedure on the turbo then went back to towing my trailer. Immediately after putting the truck back together I cleared the fault codes. On the third start up I got glow plug 2 cel, good deal. I don't need glow plugs anyway, cleared the code every day for a week just to make sure there weren't others. Well damned if I didn't finally replace that glow plug today and code P2564 is here and won't go away. I cleared the code, got the truck to temp, cleared the code again and then cranked the truck with no ac on for it to supposedly do a relearn on its own. No dice. Truck has a stock air filter back on it since before the rebuild. I hate K&Ns.
Where do I go from here? I have a finger stick and egr delete kit on hand and plan on doing them and straight pipe at the same time. It feel beat down. I've dumped a little money but a lot of time (that turbo is a bear to get out!!!, 7hrs for me) and I just want a good running truck. What can I look for to get rid of this code. And if it matters I haven't yet noticed the black smoke or lack of power. Turbo didn't look too bad when we tore it apart but I figured it was cheap insurance and a chance for me to get real personal with the truck. I've also figured out the wifey is more willing (ha, haven't figured that out yet!) on letting me buy truck parts when the truck is tore all to holy hell in the driveway if I tell her I've gotta have "modification xyz" to put it back together! ;-)
Thanks for reading and I hope someone on here has an idea for me.
